fuel gauge not registering

I have a 2000 Jimmy, and the fuel gauge doesn't work. When the tank is full the gauge works fine. Then it gets to about half a tank and the needle starts to flutter. The gas gauge goes up and down. I never know how much gas I really have. I've gotten stuck with no gas plenty of times. If anybody has input on this problem, please let me know. Also, can someone tell at what point by the trip meter do I have to fill up my tank. Thanks Angela0205

I fill the tank and reset the odometer. Then when I have about 275 miles I buy a gallon of fuel and leave it in the back. Run the truck till the fuel runs out and read the odometer. Put the gallon in and refill the tank. This tells you about how many miles you can get from an average tank. This only works if you fill the tank each time.

I also guess I will get about 20 MPG so when I can only put in $20 (about 8 gallons) I reset the odometer and figure after 100 MI I'm pushing my luck.

Or you could change the pump/sensor assembly.

my uncles gmc sonoma also does this and he hasnt figured out the problem yet. Most likely the sending unit in gas tank.

My 97 Brvada also does this. This seems common. Is there any cure?

Replace your sending unit.

I have the same problem with my 97 Jimmy. Not excatly sure whats up with mine, so I just fill it completely full and set my trip meter, once I get around 250-270 miles on the tank I fill it back up. Havent ran out yet.

Same problem here. I use the odometer and refill every 250 miles or so.
I had this checked out by a mechanic and he told me the sending unit is integrated into the fuel pump on these models. He quoted me about $400. I think i'll stick to resetting the odometer every time I fill up.

I have the same issue on a 2000 Jimmy SLT. The problem is the fuel gage sensor built into the fuel pump. You can either change the entire pump (the solution for my 2000 Jimmy) or replace just the sensor if possible. That should fix your problem.
