Strange things happening 97 Grand Prix GTGRCRYSTYK 08-22-2005, 12:09 AM Hello guys,.. Been reading the forum for a while, and decided I better register, as I can't seem to find complete info on my troubles. I really need a hand with this one,... My wife and I have a 97 Grand Prix GT 3800 engine,...What has happened over a period of time is this,..There have been various codes show up,..Anti lock brakes, Crank shaft position sensor, Trac light comes on, Gas guage only works until it hits about half tank, then it goes past full, car doesn't wqant to start ocationally, but will eventually, and the killer is this,..Driving down the road, it will bump, or thump just a little, and then the tach will go dead. Once it actaully dies when it did this. Prior to the current codes, I had replaced a coolant temp sensor, and a couple 02 sensors, as a result of the check engine light coming on, and the codes showing. The car has about 70,000 miles on it. All easy miles. All stock, save for a K&N filter, of which I carefully oil lightly. The car has never been abused at all,... The most similar posts I have found seem to indicate the Crank shaft position sensor, or the whole ECM,... Where is the ECM on this year GP?, and what is involved in replacing it? I have been told two things. One, the thing has to be programed by a dealer, and two this year just has a "prom" chip that needs to be transfered oveer to the new unit,... I need a hand guys,...Thanks much,,...>>>---> BNaylor 08-22-2005, 01:22 AM Hello guys,.. It might take care of the ABS and trac light problems too. Its located behind the harmonic balancer. The tach is going dead because of the CKPS. The ECM/PCM is located in the air box assembly. You'll see the wiring harness at the bottom. You can get an aftermarket re-programmed PCM replacement a lot cheaper than through the dealer. You cannot swap just the chip like older Grand Prixs. BTW - Before considering replacing the CKPS, undo the electrical connector to it and check pins for corrosion or poor contact. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/lizzywiz/gtp.jpg Thrasher CAI, DHP v1.0 PCM, SLP Headers, 3.25 SC pulley, CAIT GMAF, 2.5 DP/Hi-Flow CAT, u-bend delete, 160 TS, ZZP Stage 1 72mm TB, TB spacer, MSD 8.5mm wires, Autolite 103, Goodyear Gatorback Serp. & SC Belt, Nitto NT555R Drag Radials 1/4 ET: 13.210 sec. @ 104.490 mph 0 - 60 ft: 1.945 sec. diezelman 08-22-2005, 04:34 AM http://mykidz.net/GTP/CrankPosSensor.shtml here is a link BigL had posted some time ago, I recently used it to change my CPS, and it was a cake walk. 20$ for the new sensor, 15$ for the Harmonic puller, and a little over an hour of my time. Good luck! JP GRCRYSTYK 08-22-2005, 11:03 PM Guys ,... Thank you very much,..This is the most help I have had on this for sure,...And photo's to boot,..Can't ask for more than that. I will be giving the Crank sensor a shot first, as it seems to be acting up the most, and the simptoms seem to be more related to it, that anything else right off,... Looks like it will be a bit of dirty work, but hopefully worth it in the long run,... Thanks again, and I will update you all when I get it finished and run it a while,....
