Nearly 100 new McLaren F1 GTR photos, with a catch... *Updated* 56K Warning!

Sutton-Images.com is an online Motorsports photo library - probably the best one that there is, certainly the best that I have found. Within their collection of thousands of images, there are 97 images of various McLaren F1 GTRs taken by many different photographers over the years they were racing. These are almost all top notch pictures - really spectacular images that you would only expect to find inside a very nice book.

To see the images, go to www.sutton-images.com

In the top right corner of the page is the Search bar. First select the radio button next to 'Entire Archive'. Then in the SEARCH box type "McLaren and GTR" without the quotes. This will bring up four pages of thumbnails - a total of 97 images - most of which you have more than likely never seen before. Clicking on the thumbnails brings up a larger version of the image that is roughly 575x380 resolution. :cool:

Now the catch... :uhoh:

Each of the larger images has a very large, embossed-style watermark covering it that reads "Sutton Motorsport Images global" which practically ruins the quality of the pic. :(

What a horrible thing to do to a wonderful image like that. :shakehead It's almost frustrating to flip through the images, because when you find one that is really spectacular, well... :cya: :banghead:

I've managed to fix a few so far to the point that they are acceptable, but not great. I also scaled them up slightly from the image that is available on Sutton's site. I won't be able to do this with most of the images, but I'll make the effort with as many as I think are possible of achieving a positive outcome. Here's the ones I have done so far:

There is one shred of good news though. Almost all the images - in fact 95 out of 97 are available for purchase as a print. There are 5 sizes available from regular letter size up to a large poster. Here's the sizing/pricing chart:

The interesting thing is that I've seen many of the photos up there in (other places) without watermarks on them. I wonder if the website actually owns the copyright to all of them. They claim a general copyright of every image on the website, but either someone at sometime in history has bought photos and releasing them (hence the lack of a watermark) or this racket wasn't the place who originally took the photos.

Cool, thanks for the link! These pics are huge, too, but pretty expensive. Can PS remove water marks?

I would like to point out that the last picture of 13R and 14R is mis-informed. The car in the back (with the yellow and black windshield sticker) is 13R, which was driven by Ralf. 14R is in front. I have pictures of Fuji 1996 that I've posted before of 14R that verify this. 13R had it's banner switched to all black (as seen in the ZAZ pictures) after its racing career was done.

Where have you seen "many of the photos"? I recognize a few, but probably not even 10 of them. Some that I recognize are just similar to other photos. The two that are clearly recognizable - the shots of the West Adrenaline GTR - are the two that are not available for sale.

I would hardly call that place a racket. They more than likely buy images from freelance photographers that have been at these events to fill their archive. They probably have a limited-use copyright on the images, allowing them to sell the images in print form or license them for press use, which is another angle of their business model. They may be paying a flat fee to the photographer for those rights, or they could be paying a royalty to the photographer each time an image is purchased. You'll note that in some cases the copyright that you would need to credit the image to includes the photographer's name, where as with others the copyright is simply "World © SUTTON".

These images may have been sold to other publications or found other uses on the web which is why you have seen some without the copyright. Unless a photographer is specifically contracted by a publication for them to take the photos, they are usually free to sell them as many times as they can unless they sign an agreement that limits those rights. That's how they make money. If you can find these images available elsewhere then that's wonderful - most people won't look for things the way that we do though.

If you are finding some of these shots in random car galleries, then I wouldn't be surprised if people have purchased a print and scanned it - the same thing that mini magic was suggesting we do. I actually plan on buying a few myself and doing just that.

Great shots for sure. However, the price is too high for me to spend on a simple picture. The pictures of the car that intrests me the most isn't some of Mr. Sutton's best work either.

I have some exciting news! :bananasmi

A very generous person who prefers to remain nameless has managed to send me each and every one of these photos from the Sutton website absent of their watermark. :naughty:

I'll be putting them up over the weekend sometime for the rest of you to enjoy. This will save me quite a bit of time since there were still several I was planning to attempt to 'fix'. A tremendous thanks goes out to our anonymous source! :thumbsup:

Well...

I tried to buffer the image water mark figuring it's part of the link but it's imbeded. If you have mozilla you take a look at the tags by right-clicking the image backround (not image itself) and clicking page info - then go to media an look at the pix. Some might not be imbeded and the originals might appear or Right and select page source and it will displace each link... There might be some originals in there to. I'll keep trying till I break through...

Ok - Better late than never, right??? :icon16:

It took me a few extra days to get things the way that I wanted them. I blew them all up to a size I thought would increase their worth, yet not sacrifice too much overall image quality. Each thumbnail you see below is clickable for a roughly 800 pixel width image, which is larger than the originals which were mostly 525 pixels in width. :cool:

There are two "bonus" images at the end depicting Gordon Murray sitting inside the Clinic Model the day after the F1s unveiling at the Sporting Club in Monaco. :thumbsup:

The Sutton caption on this one has to be wrong. Its hard to be sure which part of it is wrong though. :screwy:

I put it down as #20R as well, but after further review it seems the car could be GTR #25R instead. If the driver listed is accurate then the car would have to be #25R because it was shared by Bellm/Gilbert-Scott/Raphanel on that date and finished in 4th place.

Edit: After even further review, the car that wore race #3 at Silverstone in 1997 did not start due to an accident, and it was GTR #20R. The drivers were Jean-Marc Gounon and Pierre-Henri Raphanel. I guess the portion of the Sutton caption that is wrong is the final placing. That picture must have been taken during practice or qualifying.

Yea, it was weird. The QV500 file showed Raphanel in 2 GTRs the same day with 20R as a "DNS" and the other being 25R. I think it's safe to say that he wasn't in 20R anymore because of the DNS.
