-How I got to this point-

I have a 1996 2WD Silverado w/ 350 V8, auto, towing pkg. 160k miles - truck is very well kept

Spent Saturday afternoon hauling 2500 lb trailer up 15-20% grade (bad) gravel roads in the country in 95+ degrees w/ ac on. Sunday, out for lunch with my girlfriend, truck dies leaving redlight with no warning and plenty of gas (near 100 deg). Truck starts up and will idle enough to pull into parking lot, trying to apply any throttle kills engine, starts a couple more times. Noticable whining sound heard from fuel pump area. We let it idle for a/c while waiting for tow, this kills it in a minute or two, truck will not restart after this. We have truck towed to friend's home garage.

About 1 1/2 year ago, i had a fuel pump die very slowly on me, I replaced this myself. Thinking this was again the problem, I replaced the fuel pump and filter monday morning. Fuel squirts out the check valve, however, engine will not start AT ALL with it's own fuel supply. pouring gas into throttle body will start engine, however, it will only run 1-2 second then sputter and die.

Thinking that maybe injector were not getting pulsed, I replace cap, rotor, and pickup module, still no start. I've checked all the fuses, and checked voltage across fuel injector wires that go into top of injection spider (about 7-10 Volts w/ key on, not enough current to power a small bulb though).

So, in summary, we have fire (starts with gas into intake), but no fuel, although all the parts to get fuel to the engine are now replaced, and check valve seems to have good pressure.

Ideas: CSFI injector poppet sticking, fuel pressure not high ENOUGH, ECM gone bad, clog between fuel filter and injector, coolant temp sensor

also - what caused the howling noise observed while idling before engine shut down for good? maybe this is preventing the truck from starting now....

I am out of town until Aug 29, but I will need to fix the truck very quickly when I get back, I am a working part time student, and as such, cannot afford to go to a dealership.

I would appreciate any help you guys can give me on this, and if any of you have shops near nashville, let me know ,and i will consider purchasing your services if I can't fix this myself.

PS- alternator died about 2 months ago, and truck was limped almost all the way home until battery voltage was too low to keep driving, hitched a ride to autozone, bought alternator and battery, and installed both on roadside, has worked perfect from then till now, maybe super low voltage condition that shut down engine also damaged fuel system components?

Might try checking the fuel pump relay (fuse) a big silver looking fuse underhood in with some other big fuses in the underhood fuse box.

Put a gauge on the fuel rail. The pump may be running but not giving enough pressure.
BTW, there is a pigtail under the rear of the relay box under the power brakes that you jumper 12V to and the pump will run continously if it is good. This bypasses the relay.
