How to disconnect speedo cable...1984 Pickup

I'm trying to get the combination meter out in my 2WD 1984 pickup. The speedo cable is holding it in place and there is no room from the top to get my hand down to the speedo cable to unfasten it. Can someone tell me the correct way to do this. I have the "cluster finish panel" off, and the combination meter screws are removed, but it won't move more than one inch because of the speed cable. So how do I get my hand on the speedo cable?

its tough , but it can be done ... another way is to slide under the truck and undo it at the tranny ... giving you some slack .

Thanks, I think the easy way to do this would be to undo the speedo cable at the transmission because the way it is right now, even if I could get the speedo cable unhooked at the speedometer there's no way I would be able to get it back on without some slack. I didn't think of that, it's a good idea. And if I ever replace the speed cable I'll find one that's a few inches longer.
