A couple questions about a 91 jetta turbo diesel91cx 08-14-2005, 06:50 PM I dont know much about diesel, Im looking at a 91 turbo diesel it has 390,000 km on it the body is great, i was just wondering what kind of milage does a diesel engine last, and how much hp does the 91 turbo diesel engin have. What kind of speeds would you expect to get out of one? thanks Doug Tatham 09-14-2005, 12:38 PM I dont know much about diesel, Im looking at a 91 turbo diesel it has 390,000 km on it the body is great, i was just wondering what kind of milage does a diesel engine last, and how much hp does the 91 turbo diesel engin have. What kind of speeds would you expect to get out of one? thanks The rule of thumb is that at 350,000 the engine is just getting broken in.There are some things you should consider though. In 1991 they started the model year with a non turbo diesel (I owned one of them), then went to a turbo diesel that allowed it to pass emmissions requirements, then went to a turbo that actually boosted the power. If the one your looking at is the middle one, you may have some parts problems. The non turbo has about 55 hp, the middle has about 60 and I think the larger turbo put out around 80. It's been a couple years since I looked the numbers up, so take them with a grain of salt. At any rate, don't expect to burn rubber. The newer turbo diesels have similar HP to a gas burner. You don't lose much in the top speed by going diesel, you do lose accelleration. The diesels will typically get 50% or so better gas millage than their gas equivelents. If its a car to drive to and from work, diesels are hard to beat. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
