97 caravan- AC & Cruisespeedrik 08-13-2005, 05:07 PM Cruise just stopped working, brake lights work. No indicator lights either. Any suggestions, preferably cheap and easy - fuse? AC - Actually 3rd summer this has been going on. When the AC kicks on, it makes a hidious screech. Upon closer review, noted the A/C pulley was resistant to turning- belt is moving full speed while the pulley makes a revolution maybe once per 1 or 2 seconds. This has a seperate belt than the serpatine belt, smaller. I think the belt is the screech as it does not slow down while the A/C pulley barely revolves. Still puts out cold air, but it is very annoying going down the road when it kicks on. While back, was told the compressor (would make #2) was going out and could not do further damage,so....that was 3 yrs ago. Suggestions? Big repair, little repair? yogi_123rd 08-14-2005, 12:09 PM The screech noise is your belt slipping over a metal pulley. Check the belt's tension by pushing inward at the mid point between pulleys. Should be about 1/2 inch deflection at most. Usually, an old belt stretches or cracks develop on the underside causing the noise. In your case, you may have a frozen or binding idler arm pulley. To really inspect the idler pulley, you would need to take all the tension off the belt. You should try replacing the belt ($4.00 at autozone) at least. To change the belt, you loosen the center lock nut on the pulley (15mm) and remove tension on the belt via the 10mm adjusting bolt accessable from the top. Reverse to install. speedrik 08-15-2005, 08:08 PM Thanks. Failed to mention that when the AC is off, the pully on the AC unit turns freely. Tension on the belt is less than 1/2" cantstoponred 08-21-2005, 12:06 PM Just fixed the same cruise control problem in my caravan. Cruise control runs off of the vacuum system. I found a brake in one of the lines. Specifically, the line going from the cruise control unit to the throttle. I'd check that first. Either replace the line or repair using a line coupler. Spit 09-28-2005, 05:04 PM Sounds like a bad compressor and or bad compressor clutch. The pulley on the end of the clutch spins freely until the clutch is engergized with 12 volts... then it pulls the pulley in which engages it to the inner workings of the compressor. I had a 97 G-Caravan that the compressor made a terrible noise when accelerating from a stop. it was not a belt it was the compressor itself... according to a Chrysler Mechanic I talked to these compressors never go bad unless the evaporator leaks air gets into the system and the moisture ruins the compressor... I did have a bad evaporator too by the way. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
