On my way home the other day...all the sudden I have nothing, feels like it's in neutral...Rev it a bit...nothing...starts to make a whirring sound, engages, van moves 3 inches and then back to nothing, no reverse...no nothing. Is there something that can be fixed or is this a tranny replacement??? Anyone else with this problem? If this is without a doubt replacement, How difficult is this to do on these??? Any input would be great!

I think it sounds like tranny replacement time. Caravans and Voyagers have this common trait.

A transmission is going to cost you between $1200 and $1400 and if your Caravan is older than '96 or over 100K miles, you may have to ask yourself is it is worth it to you. Your approaching the cost of a nice used van.

I would not be so quick to say it is the transmission, but it could be something electrical. In ~most~ cases a failing transmission will give warning signs, but an electrical problem may not. Before I condemed the tranny I'd check the Neutral safety switch, PRNDL switch, speed sensors, etc. Heck, even a failed Engine Control Module (ECM) can have an affect on the transmission.....

Check the fluid (no doubt you already have). Is there enough in there. My '91 came from the dealer NEW a quart low and with only 120 miles jumped to "limp" mode. Had it towed. Dealer checked...it was a quart low. is the fluid dark brown or smells "burnt"? Take it to a GOOD tranny shop and ask their opinion. If it is history consider getting another vehicle...it aint worth the trouble and money to keep it going.
