I have a 97 ZJ V8 all time 4wd. I have developed a noise in the front end that starts around 50 mph. The sound only happens when I let off the throttle. It is a wierd sound kind of a grind/whine. I have had new bearings, and new CV shafts put into the axle and the sound is still present. Could this be an alignment problem or ring and pinion?

Sound like the Pinion Bearing. The noise can be heard mostly above 50 sometimes lower mph and when letting off the throttle.

Had the same noise in my 97. It was the front diffential carrier bearings. The dealer will stiff you on the repair. He said three days and $1200. I went to a rear end shop (Randy's Ring and Pinion) and they did the job in one day for $529.

Well it seems I have a similar noise might be normal, I dunno.

When going 50 MPH or above and pressing on the gas pedal I hear a whirring/woooo sound coming from the front end if I just give it a little bit of gas enough to keep moving down the highway nothing no noise, but if I give it a litltle bit more gas to pick up some speed (around 300 RPMS higher) I hear the whirring. I htink the noise has always been there since I have had the jeep (almost 2 years) never worried about it until I read this thread. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or is there a problem.
