2002 service engine soon light

The "sevice engine soon" light on my 2002 Explorer XLT has stayed on steady for several days now. As the manual said, I checked the gas cap is tight, and added a better grade of fuel even though the regular has worked fine for 3 years. Could it be a faulty sensor? Any suggestions before a costly visit to the dealer?

You will need to have the check engine light diagnosed. Some chain auto parts stores will read the code for free. Post the code number back here before you buy any parts. Remember the auto parts store makes money by selling parts.

Auto Zone and others will read the code. if it is a false alarm like the gas cap, it will not go off. you need to remvoe the battery cable for 10 minutes, turn on the head lights to drain the "memory" completely. reinstall the battery cable and see if the light comes back, if so, get the codes read.

If you get the very common P0401 it could be the (again, very common) DPFE Sensor. Here's a write-up on replacing the DPFE.

Great! BTW I heard they extended the warranty on that part. You might want to check with the dealership and see if they can refund the part cost.

I did check with the dealer and it is not covered. I even bought the best extended warranty. I think I'll double check when I get back form fishing in a few days. thanks
