My '93 Metro has the 1.0 L, 3 cylinder engine.

The mechanical engine noise is quite loud - not the firing of the
cylinders!

The rockers, the belts, whatever - are quite loud.

I know some engines make noise like a chainsaw when you get
near them as at a stoplight.

I Know that if it were really bad, the engine would not have run
for the 4 thousand miles I've put on it without dying.

Is it normal for those small engines to make all sorts of, what I call,
grinding and scraping noises?

Sounds like a kitchen mixer while it scrapes the metal bowl....

Bugs the hell out of me - I am a noise worrier.

Does it sound like a bad bearing?

Does the sound change when rev's increase?

REVS - no, just drowned out by the normal engine noise.

I don't know... That is what I am trying to find out from others.

I would describe it as sounding like an Electric Chain Saw -
you know - sound of the chain w/o normal engine noise.

A lot seems to come from the valve cover. If I open the
oil adding cap while the engine runs - WOW! Very loud.
What would the bearings for the cam shaft going bad sound like?

It is VERY loud before the engine warms up. Still noisy all the time.

If I listen on the left side down by the water pump/alternator,
it sounds like a chain saw blade spinning.

This has been going on for 4,000 miles, so if it was a bad thing,
I suppose the engine would have "broken" somewhere...!

I replaced the timing belt and tensioner pully 4k miles ago,
and am wondering if the tensioner pully is noisy - or the belt itself?

I just don't want some Catastrophic failure to occur out on some
lonely road in the middle of the night.......
