Porting manifolds and heads a good option?

I am modifying the engine, and of course the intake and exhaust manifolds will have to be improved. So will the head. I was gona buy new/used performance heads and intake/exhaust manifolds, but now i got the idea to modify the ports with a rotary tool. I havent done it before, and want to know if it is worth the money saved. Do ported heads and manifolds help to produce as much power as performance heads and manifolds? If not, are they worth porting? I have a textbook on porting, and am good with the rotary tool so it shouldnt be much of a problem for me. just want to know if it is worth it.

Thanks for any input.

depends on the heads, if you have the swirl port heads, don't waste your time. and aftermarket intake manifolds aren't expensive at all really. I wouldn't try to modify the exhaust manifolds either, just get some headers.
