H22 Valve Cover Problem!!!!!!

I need help!!!!!

So I installed a new Valve Cover on my H22A this weekend and as I was tightening down the Head Bolt on one of the Bolts and it snapped!! Now the Bolt that goes through the Valve Cover and goes into the Head is broken and the top part of the Bolt is inside the Head Bolt.

I'm wondering what to do now. Do I need to take the Valve Cover back off and replace the Bolt that goes into the Head and than replace the Head Bolt as well????????????? If so, how do I get the Bolt out of the Head? Is this easy??

Yes. If it's below the valve cover replace it. If it sticks out above the cover and grommet, even a couple of threads, you should be fine. How nuch torque did you use to snap it though?? I only did it finger tight and then 1/2-3/4 turn after that when I put the valve cover on my b16.

Naw, unfortnatley it snapped just below the grommet. Even if it did snap above the grommet, I would've needed to buy a new Head Bolt though because the top of the Bolt is still inside the Head Bolt.

Anyway, knowing that. Is the Bolt pretty easy to get out of the Head? What tool should I use to get a grip on it so I can unscrew it out of there?

I'm not too sure, maybe a pair of good pliers or something like that. Like I said when I put my valve cover on, I only did it finger tight and then about 1/2 turn past that. If that doesn't work... make sure you cover up the grommet area some how so oil doesn't go flying all over the engine bay when you drive it to a mechanic, or anywhere else for that matter until you get it fixed.

Hahaha, it's funny that you said that. I found out what comes out of that grommet the hard way when it's not bolted down......lololololol. Hot air and oil........lolololol.

Anyway, I was thinking of a good pair of pliers as well. I didn't know if you knew of a different way or not.

Oh, I didn't answer you before. I was just using a regular rachet and socket to tighten them so I have no idea how much torque I was putting on that head. To much I guess....lolololol.

Just a couple more questions for you. Do you think I should just go straight to Honda to get that bolt and head and what's the best way to keep that grommet on while I'm waiting??

1/yes honda all the way, unless you want to upgrade to ARP all the way around(I think that's right, might be APR though)

2/don't laugh but duct tape, would be my best guess. create like a star pattern over the hole and it should be good.

go to sears, pick up a pair of craftsman extra grip pliers and you are set.

Nice, you guys have been really helpful. I think I'll be heading to Honda this weekend and pick up a new bolt and head bolt and than over to Sears to pick up a new pair of pliers. It's a good excuse to give my wife to buy new tools, hehehehehehe.

use some vise grips lololololololololololol. They will work better than a regular pair of pliers. lolololololololololol. Or if there is still threads on the bolt, put 2 bolts on it, tighten them together then use the bottom bolt to take it out. lolololololololololol. Is it just me or are you loling way too much. lolololololololololol I'm just picking on you man :tongue:, but yeah, definatley vice grips all the way if there are no threads left.

Well, it all went good. I got the screw out of the valve cover itself that holds the wire cover down and I also got the stud out. The stuf ended up have a 10mm nut towards the bottom of it so I just used a long socket on it and it popped right out.

i believe it is a 12mm nut not a 10mm ;)

That's odd, because the 10mm socket worked on it. I wonder if we're talking about the same thing. I know that some of the bolts inside the head that hold down the oil rales and some of the internals of the head have some 12mm's.
