CRX vs Miata

Ok im deciding wat car im goin to get and im thinkin either a CRX or a Miata. If i got a CRX it would be a DX most likely and i would swap the engine w/ a B series. Im not sure wat swaps r easy to do with a Miata, so u kno that would be helpful. I kno that a Miata stocked has 140 hp and a DX has 75(i think...hmm...), but that doesnt really matter if i do an engine swap. A DX is about 600 lbs lighter than a Miata, but a Miata is RWD. Id like to kno wat u think and if u can get some #s that would help. O and if u kno about ECUs and the diff hardness of them cuz im use to workin on old cars w/ nothin like that or jus anything else u think is important to kno, i really do appreicate it
PS dont post if u think a DX sucks jus cuz its an import. I kno u hate people who r all show n no go, i hate them too and people do that to all cars not jus imports

I'd go for the Miata. Not all of them had 140 hp (hp depends on year), and I don't see the CRX being 600 pounds lighter. CRXs weighed between 1850 and 2150 pounds, and the early Miatas were very close to 2000 pounds.

I'm with Clawhammer.

The engine in the Miata can be turbo-charged pretty easily while Honda motors don't like too much forced induction without a lot of work. Also, the Miata is just going to handle better.

The CRX is at most 200 pounds lighter than the Miata. The Miata didn't have 140 horsepower until 1999; it had 118 horsepower with the 1.6L engine between '90 and '92, and 126 with the 1.8L engine between '93 and '97. The CRX had 108 at most. I'd say go with the Miata if RWD is important to you.

As for Miata swaps i've heard of a few people swapping in rotary engines into them. Sounds like a fun idea, giving the Miata that kinda power for its impressive chassis.

OK well i dont kno much about Miatas so i jus used the new specs and ive heard they weigh 2400 and a DX is 1800, so that is 600 lbs lighter. If i did get a CRX i said i would do a engine swap so thats 180 hp. At that point the CRX would win, so wat engine swaps can u do to the Miata. Thx everyone for the imput so far and ill look into the rotary.

If you just care about drag racing, get an LT1 Camaro or 5.0 Mustang. A lot more power for about the same amount of money, and no swap required.

Their performance are actualy very simalar. Yes, the miata has the edge which is shown in autocross results but the crx is right there behind it. The CRX is also easier to drive at its limits then the miata which can help keep you consistant.
Assuming both cars are taken care of well I would go for a CRX for a daily driver. Hardtop plus a good fair ammount of room to put stuff, CRX wins that hands down. for pure fun weekend warrior/autocross car I would have to give a slighter edge the miata, RWD, topless roadster fun.
On the other hand, finding a good well taken care of CRX that hasnt been boy racerd out can be hard these days, and they tend to go for a pretty penny. The vast majority of miata's on the other hand are treated simply as weekend cars and are usualy babied. So finding good clean miata at a fair price is not hard to do by any meens. I almost purchased a black 94 miata with hardtop and 70k miles on her for about $3000, unfortunately I wasnt able to get out there to take a look at the car in time before she got sold. :(

*also, look in to first gen CRX's, they are even lighter and dont sell for as much as the 2nd gens(becuase they arent mad jdm tyte y0 and dont have as many body kits avaliable for them...)

*edit: If this is for drag racing I wouldnt get either of the cars, LT1 camaro/firebird's, 5.0stang and turbo 2.3 mustangs, merkur xr4ti's, starions/conquests,mk3 turbo supra's, turbo DSM's, TII rx7's can get you quicker times for less coin/work. But if givin the choise between the two I could go for the miata simply becuase its RWD.
Swaps for the miata's, I have seen them all. from 5.0mustang engines to LT1's to LS1's, to turbo ford 2.3 to 13bt. Honestly I wouldnt bother with a v8 in a miata, thats althought sadisticly fun just overkill for such a small car with small tires. The chassis was not built to withstand the torque and I rarely say this but the weight of the v8 can change the chandling characteristics of the car(even the ls1), same goes for a turbo rotary engine.
"I" would personaly go with a later miata 1.8 engine and turbo that. That will give you more then enough power for such a little car with such a small wheel base.

If this is your first car go with the CRX. If not go with the Miata.

If this is your first I wouldn't get either. If you get hit you will be crushed in either one of them. The miata is a better car I am sure. The CRX only really has light weight going for it. You are going to end up spending pretty substantial money just to make a CRX fast, even if you never do anything to the miata at least its pretty cool already. Personally though for your first car I would recomend something bigger and safer and newer than either of these cars.

The car i get would be my second car. Does anyone kno about how much insurance would be for a miata. Also does anyone kno any other swaps for a miata besides a rotary cuz i heard it burns a lot of oil or something like that.

I'd go with the Miata. Instead of swapping the motor, you should add a turbo to the stock motor.

Considering the Miata has over 3 scca titles under its belt and the CRX has jack...

I seriously considered a Miata. They're incredibly fun, cheap cars that are farily reliable. RWD and top-down road carving for $2000 is hard to beat. I went with a CRX, however, for a number of reasons: 1) As fun as a roadster is, I didn't want the body roll of a soft top. 2) The CRX has a weight advantage, and its handling is only slightly behind that of a MIata. 3) My project car is also my daily driver, so I have to be able to haul stuff around. The Miata has ZERO storage space. Not good for trips to and from college. 4) Though this is completely a matter of personal preference, I prefer the old-school Honda look to the cutesy roadster.

Like others have side, if you're looking for a purpose-built autocrosser or weekend hot-lapper, go for the Miata. Daily driver that's also a compotent track performer: CRX. Above all else, test drive both cars. Opinions and numbers are one thing, but you have to actually experience both cars and decide for yourself. Good luck.

how did you change your stars and stuff? i hate my enthusiast rating...good call for the storage space...the miatas are definetely not a good family oriented car...

To be honest, neither is a CRX. Anything with less than three seats is not exactly family-oriented. Regarding the stars and personal description, I donated some money to AF a few years ago when the site was struggling from server overload. I got some purple stars in exchange for $25.
