now that i found it - is there a special tool to get to and twist(i assume) to get it off.

I drained mine by default when replacing the lower radiator hose. The pic I'm looking at in my manual, it looks like the plastic cap. If you can't turn it by hand, try a pair of pliers, with a rag over the plastic tab to break it loose. Only do this with the engine dead cold. Get a bucket under there, once you pull the stopper it does'nt stop flowing.

I broke the tab off with pliers. Removing the lower hose works.

That probably would have been my luck too Drew.
I've got an '89 with the original radiator.
