Should be a vanos engine, which I believe has 24 valves,
so therefore 4 valves per cylinder.

It is a 24 valve motor and therefore has 4 valves per cylinder. Depending on the year of the vehicle determines if the motor's intake valves are fitted with Vanos on the Intake valves. I do believe that this was done in 1993. It mainly gives the car a smother torque curve.
