2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport - Engine Noisepetejeep2000 07-28-2005, 10:34 PM Anyone: My jeep has started making this kind of noise that the only way to describe it is to say that is sounds like if you were to run a puddy knife along any street, you would get this kind of scraping noise. This only happens when the gas pedal is pressed, but it only happens every so often. I can tell when it happens when i drive the jeep around for a few hours and then each time i press the pedal to speed up the 'scraping' noise happens. My mechanic checked: belt and ac operatiuon, checked axles and propeller shafts, checked axle fluid levels and transfer case operation. He could not find the problem. Some days i can take the jeep out and i wont hear any noise from the engine, but as soon as i drive around awhile, then the noise happens. It almost seems like i need the really heat up the engine, then each time i press the gas pedal, the noise sounds like some take a butter knife and scrapes the ground. The scond time i took the jeep to my mechanic, he drained the re-filled the transfer case. Any suggestions on what, where & why am i getting the noise? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sector95 08-03-2005, 01:14 AM Does the noise come from the engine or from under the chassis (transmission, tranfer case, axles)? Does it occur when the A/C is running? Are you more prone to hear it when doing stop and go driving or freeway driving? You need to narrow down the location. Try starting your Jeep, let it idle until the electric fan kicks in and see if you can duplicate the noise (rev the engine a bit) while sitting in your driveway. Run the A/C and see if it might be the source. Physically look under the hood for possible rub areas (fan shrouds, serpintine belt, etc). mike rruno 08-05-2005, 10:59 AM Pete, this is just a shot in the dark, but check the heat shield above the muffler. This happened to me, It was driving me crazy for about a week and I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I checked everything from brakes to tranfer case. Every time I looked underneath vehicle I found nothing. Finally I crawled below a saw the corner of the shield on top of the muffler, it was slidding back and forth on muffler and was hitting the drive shaft (that was the scrapping noise I heard). Good Luck. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cracked exhaust manifold. I had a noise like this and it went away after the dealer replaced the "exhaust tubing header" unit. petejeep2000 08-26-2005, 05:54 PM Pete, this is just a shot in the dark, but check the heat shield above the muffler. Good Luck. Thanks for the suggestion. What my mechanic did was - he said that he drained the transfer case, he didn't find anything. But the noise did stop, so i dont know at this point. I guess i'll keep an eye on it. Thanks again. Pete petejeep2000 08-26-2005, 05:56 PM Does the noise come from the engine or from under the chassis (transmission, tranfer case, axles)?
