There is a problem with the transmission on my 98 taurus. When I start driving it after is has sat for a while it will not shift up out of low gear for a couple of blocks. The engine will run up to 5000 rpms or so and not shift. Then after a couple of blocks it shifts up, and hard. It only does it when it has not run for a while. Is this just a sensor or something else wrong with the tranny? Anyone got any ideas?

Did you check the fluid level?

Yes, that was the first thing I checked. Guess I should have added that to the original question.
