Buying a used Tundra - 6 or 8 cylinder? shotgun_000 07-20-2005, 11:42 AM What I'm hoping to find is a used Tundra, with extended cab and 4 wheel drive for around 13k or less. At first I was going to get a Tacoma, but those things are selling for more than a Tundra :screwy: One thing I'm still unsure of is the choice of a 6 cylinder or 8 cylinder. I don't think the mpg varies that much to worry about. My concern is that the 6 cylinder might be underpowered in a 4x4 truck. I think in early years, it was rated at 190hp. My 1991 K1500 is rated at 210hp, and it is an absolute slug. So, should I go for the V-8 even if it costs a little more? I don't tow much, although I do haul a lot of stuff and go offroad on occassion. Also, how many miles is too much to be considered unreliable? I know that part of the answer depends on how the owner maintained the vehicle, and if the mileage was highway miles. Assuming the average owner and use, what mileage would be safe? I need for the truck to last for at least 5 years or 100,000 miles. Thanks! ToyTundra 07-20-2005, 06:17 PM The easiest way would be to drive both. The V8 isn't a power house so the 6 may be a contender axsb 07-22-2005, 10:45 AM i said go for the v8 you have that tourque. i love it. off road doesn't seem sluggish at all with proper rubber. philmag1 08-08-2005, 09:06 PM I just bought a new Tundra SR5 ext cab v-6 it packs 245 ponies and gets over 5 miles per gallon better than V-8 so if older ones are the same it should be fine.
