Hello

I'm working on a 93 Escort of which I'm completing a clutch replacement. As you may know, the place to add and check the level of the lubricant is the Speed sensor. However, I cannot get this thing out of the tranny. Because of this I cannot use the gear for a dipstick.

Anyone know how much lubricant this tranny takes? Currently, I'm filliing the tranny using the vent hole. It's a slow process (1 qt every 5 mts). I roughly checked what came out and got aprox 2.5 qts. The Haynes manual does not have a qty listed that I could findm

Please respond soon so I can get this car on the road. This has been a long process working on it when I have time.

Thank you so much for your time and reply!

My Haynes Manual says 2 and 7/8 Quarts of Mercon ATF.

I hate that Haynes manual. If you go to the part about changing tranny fluid it doesn't tell you how much :banghead: It's in another section of the book! Go figure.... :bs:

Why can't you get it out? I know its in a bad spot - maybe trying slippin ga csrewdriver in there and pry it up. I really think yer gonna be better being able to actually check it... too much or too little, oyu could do some damage....

The speed sensor is stuck in the tranny. I've tried just pulling on it to get it out. I've tried prying, I've under cut around the sensor and tried prying. (the edge has broken instead of the sensor coming out) I am going to pull the right axel (again) and see if I can get the speed sensor out by pushing up on it. Unknowing I broke my speed sensor when I unhooked the speedo cable. I need to pull the axel to get the gear out of the tranny. Hopfully I don't have to pull the tranny (again).

Thank you for your reply!

I'll keep your guys informend.

Hey just FYI, I have an extra speed sensor. I'm amidst replacing my tranny and just acquired one from a junkyard, it came w/ everything attached - so if you need that or any other peices of it let me know. The orig tranny was in pretty good shape, the input shaft selector finally wore out.
I'm not sure that going through the axle hole will give the access you need... good luck

How much do you want for the speed sensor? I'm fixing this car up for a single mom. I'm trying to keep the cost low.

Lets see, by yer zip I'll guess it'll cost maybe $3 to mail it; my new favorite beer is ~$7 per six pack, which is just what I need to get motivated to put this !@#$ thing back in place. You can have it and anything else that'll fit in the package for $10.

Given the recent economy I've gone to basing the value of things on the one thing that is constant - food!

10.00 sounds like a deal. This speed sensor is from a 5 spd? Right? It's from the tranny that you pulled out of your car that was working when you pulled it. Your 95 had a cable running the speedo? I broke the hold down bolt trying to get it out. Could you include that in the package too? (Every bolt on this car is rusted! Good thing that it was given to me.) I do wish that I had worked on getting the Speed sensor out when the tranny was sitting on the floor! Now I have to work at the ends of my finger tips either bending over a fender or underneath holding my arms up getting dirt in my eyes.

If all of the above are true, how would you like me to get the :2cents: X 500 cents (10.00) to you?

Thanks

No prob, will include that bolt. Funny, I managed to lose that same one the last time I checked the fluid (it just vanish). Had the darnest time findin ga replacement b/c its unusually long for a 10mm bolt.
Yes, 5 speed, off a '93 actually. I just got a whole tranny from the junkyard, the sensor was on it bolt included. Same deal as the '95, cable runs through it w/ a little clip that slides it to hold it secure. Actually I was going to keep the one from my '95 since I knew it worked w/ the rest of the wiring on the car - but the part is exactly the same.
Use PayPal? I have an account tied to my email address, wh21067@yahoo.com. If you have an account then you can just tranfer $$ w/ no charge to anybody.
Send me a PM for more info if you want.

hey, i believe there are two types of almost identical speed sensors for the escort 5 spds. you sure youre swapping the right one, right?

to check, count the # teeth on the 'dipstick' gear

sure is weird that you cant get it out. its a damn tight fit- aluminum cylinder of s.sensor into aluminum tranny case. i suppose you tried lots of pb blaster and tapping and whatnot?

cheers,
anthony

Hey I haven't received any $$ yet - just wanted to make sure I shouldn't have?

As far as I can tell teh 2 sensors aret he same - only diff is one ('95) has a red sline, the other is an off-white ('93). Actually white seems more practical since the fluid is red - whos brilliant idea was it to make the gear teh same color as the fluid???

Well I'll be damned.
Take a look at this pic of the 2 sensors

http://dhairston.echnet.com/Tracer/Speed_Sensors.JPG

Bummer looks like HTML dosn't work??
http://dhairston.echnet.com/Tracer/Speed_Sensors.JPG

Look identical to me.
However if oyu count the teeth - red one ('95) has 22; Ivory one ('93) has 23.
Other than that they are identical.
This raises an interesting pont, though. If the gearing is different on these - does that mean that the final gearing is slightly different on the '93 tranny verses the '95? Or, was there a slightly different stock tire size between those years? The difference of 1/22 is ~4.5%.

And now I wonder - which should I use in my '95 w/ the '93 tranny, the "matching" one from the '93 (this is what I'd lead towards) or the native one from the '95? I guess the answer lays in *where* there counteractive difference is....

You should have 10.00 in your paypal account.

I will send you an email with my address.

I have a favor to ask you. Do you have a tranny sitting out of a car? Would you please look in the hole for the right drive axel and see if there would be a way that I can get to the underside of the speed sensor and pop it out? This would be very helpful so I don't have to pull the axel and find out that it will not be of any help.

I'll be honest w/ you - after takin ga look at this, I don'ty see any way in he$$ you could pop it out by going through the axle holes. not only are the gears in teh way, but the thing sits essentially beside the hole so oyu'd have to turn a 100 degree angle just to get to it. Sorry for the bad news!
I'm dropping yer sensor in the mail today, I'm sending the one off my '95 (bolt included).
Yours has a red tip, right? (that is assuming you've seen it, haha).

I was thinking that I would get the one from the 93.... I hope the one from the 95 works???

Thanks for checking in the shaft hole for me. I'll leave the axel in place.

I think that I'll find a tap that fits the hole in the speed sensor and thread it, put in a threaded rod and connect it to a slid hammer. That should pop it out... I hope so any way!

Thanks again!

I've been wanting to change the fluid on my 97. The Haynes manual says it doesn't need to be done except under severe conditions. I guess the red clay country roads of Arkansas are about as severe as it can get. I can't even see the speed sensor on mine. Do you need to pull the battery box to get to it? I'd just as soon dump it down the vent hole. But I can't find the hole. Story of my life. Could you tell me where it's at?

Oh crap! Sorry abut that! For some reason I wast hinking you had a '95, like mine. Since the teeth were different, I decided it would be beteer for me to keep the one that was originally w/ my "new" tranny, which is also a 93 - so I thought, hey, tha works out well for both of us, I don't need the old one and he does.

So the magic question is - what will happen? If the # of teeth are different (int his case 1 fewer) I'd think that'd make the speedo off, although not by much. However, the gear SIZE is the same, so in that respect 1 revolution of 1 shoudl still be the same. Unfortunately the different # of teeth may cause the meshing between the gears to be funky... now I'm really curious.

I think your slide hammer idea would work. only problem is that all the force will not be in teh center of the gear, so it worn't pull straight up - hopefullynothing will break!

Oh, get this, my wife had already spent that $10 on eBay before I even knew I had it. Women! No beer for me now!

I did, and if fact I replied? however it was very late (? midnight) and I was off to bed. I'll try my best to get you a meter reading on that thing this afternoon.
Honestly though I don't think it matters - the speedo is run off of the cable, which, if oyu changet he gear heads like you mentioned, should work fine. I think the electrical part is used only by the cruise control, and so if that is off a little it will just run a little faster/slower than you set it.
