1999 odometer goes out

I have read and found out what the problem is for the digital odometer, for those who may not know it is a resistor on the board that heats up and looses contact. What I was wandering is how many people have this problem and why is it not something that ford would recall? To me this is a fire hazard, having an electrical component arcing (that is what it is doing when it works for a little while) in a vehicle. Someone is bound to be driving down the road and their expdedition is going to go up in flames.
Is there anyway we can get ford to recall this?

I have the exact problem. Where you able to fix this yourself or did you have to go to the dealer. I can't pass inspection until this is fixed. Any suggestions.

No I have not fixed my problem. I read that you can take the gauges apart and use a low amp soldering gun to fix this. You will see where it needs to be fixed as the board will be brownish.

Ford tried the light switch and a couple other things before finally replacing the instrument cluster. Fixed the odometer going out problem, but what a pain.

This is a very easy fix, i did it on my '98 all you need is a 10 mm socket, T-10 or T-15 driver, i forget which and a soldering iron. after you remove the instrument cluster, remove the back cover and you'll see a white ribbon cable, there is a white power resistor by there, the bad connection(s) could be on the resistor or on the ribbon cable as mine were, simply look at the solder connections and look for one that has a crack around the center, touch it up with the iron and all will be well, until it goes bad again. but that shouldn't be for a long while. if you'd like it to go a little longer, RCA (Thompsons) came out with some solder that's supposed to be extra flexible a number of years ago to fix their TV's where they mounted the FM tuner right on the main board, which heated up and cooled down at different rates causing the same type of problem. check with local repair shops.

same thing with mine, sometimes it works sometimes not. After reading all these posts I am starting to wonder whether these expeditions (1999) which I have had for 6 years are realy not so hot.their plugs are a pain, the coils go bad, the suspension pieces break and the gas mileage on the 5.4 plain stinks, but I still like it better than my wifes suburban

no there is no recall on this problem and if it doesn't post a safety concern ford will not repair it
