 Can anyone help, I have a 1997 LeSabre Limited that stalls in slow traffic & while travelling at 55 mph, electric does not seem to be failing as radio and air conditioning contiue to work when car stalls. Have replaced battery, spark plugs, altenator. Problem just seems to be getting worse. Also noticing steam escape from grill, car heats up above 200 but not overheating, discharges steam and temperature drops. My mechanic says everything looks fine. Can anyone help? Want to keep the car but it seems to be unreliable. Mileage at 100,576.

Grateful for any help you can give. :iceslolan

If the car is stalling, it should set a code. Have your mechanic read the codes, if any. You should not be getting steam out from under the hood! I would assume the coolant is boiling into the overflow tank.It sounds like you are low on coolant or have air in the cooling system. Your mechanic should know how to bleed the system and check to be sure it is full of coolant. Also, have him check cooling fans for proper operation.

I had a stalling problem with my 97. It turned out to be the gound on the fender well by the battery. On mine, every thing went dead. I would have ALL of the grounds checked. This is a really good post on this forum about this.

I would print this out and take it to your mechanic.

Just another thought, you need to check your oil for signs of coolant mixed with the oil. The plastic intake seems to crack on these cars. If that is the case, and you don't do something soon, you will need a new engine!!

Thanks, I had that problem in the past and luckily must have caught it in time. I did have a large repair bill from it. I just want to say I really appreciate everyone's help and ideas. I really want to keep the car, it just breaks my heart that I keep pouring money into it and no fix. It runs good for a short time then starts back up with the same problems. I got one repoy regarding the ground by the battery and am really wondering if that could be it, the symptoms started after I had the battery replaced.

Give it a try. Take the nut off and clean every thing up. Put it back together and see if it's better.

Also, check the link I posted above, the post mentions other places that a ground could be bad.

What you want to do is check both terminals of the battery for corrosion.
Make sure both postive cables are connected to the battery positive terminal!
If 1 of them is getting pwr and the other is not. That will cause the car to stall in traffic.

Oh yea, no ground will do that too. So un bolt them and clean them.
