my friend has a '98 civic hx with the cvt transmission. his car kind of has a little problem that i didn't know how to answer so maybe someone here can help. his problem is that whenever he comes to a stop and then steps on the gas again, his car jerks. so let's say he comes to a stop sign and then he stops, maybe down to 1 or 2 mph, then steps on the gas again his car would jerk. i can't seem to figure out what is wrong with it. and another problem, i don't know if it's realted, his car is getting poor gas mileage for the civic hx which is rated at something around 37mpg mixed driving, but he's only getting around 28mpg. he doesn't drive like a maniac so i don't think that it's his driving habits. anyone have any ideas?

I have the jerkin thing too. its just the tranny engaging.

how fast does he xlRate, how fat are the people in his car. Those all have to do with gas mileage.

is the car stock...?

I replaced my air filter and that seemed to help smooth the throttle response. aftermarket exhaust generally smooth throttle response...

also i generally never drop the tranny into 1st unless i'm at a complete stop...that will help avoid the jerking response...

yeah all cars will jerk if you are going to fast, downshift, and stomp on the gas again.

mine used to do it a lot. its pretty annoying, but i can deal with it.

actually his car is an automatic being that it is the cvt transmission. he weighs...I'm guessing...200 pounds or so. but he's losing about 7 miles on the average mpg, that's a real big loss. his car is stock. with maybe the exception of a muffler, but just the muffler. other than that i think bone stock.

Also keep in mind that the MPG they put on the sticker is pretty much the absolute optimum. This means driving like an old lady, in perfect weather conditions, on perfect fully inflated tires, with minimal cargo (and passengers), clean gas, fully tuned up, downhill, with the wind behind you. :p

He may have a leak in his transmission. Have him check the tranny fluid and top it off if necessary. Check it again in a couple of days and if it is down again, you know that that is your culprit. If his auto is slipping that is probably the case. Good luck.

Thats a tough one, Im guessing not many on this board are too familiar with the CVT.

What kind of "jerk" are talking about? Does it bog and then come back and slams into gear? Does it simply just find the right gear and then jerk you back into the seat? It's kinda hard to diagnose problems over the internet with a one word symptom.

the "jerk" is a sort of sudden surge of power then go back to normal, so let's say you were in the car, if you stepped on the gas then it would feel like the car jumps forward then it goes back to normal. kind of like when a rollercoaster starts, the sudden pull forward then goes to a "coasting" speed. and like stated before, it would happen a lot at stop signs, when he slows down then steps on the gas suddenly without a complete stop, hope that helps

Give me until tomorrow, I'll try to find out if it's normal.

I've gtot a '99 HX with the CVT transmission. Everything is stock and I don't drive it hard. The transmssion was replaced under warranty at 16k miles - it now has 40K and it's starting to give a rough, jerky shudder whenever coming off a complete stop. I the dealer has it now and wants to "change the transmission fluid 3 times driving between changes and if that doesn't do it REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION" Sounds a litlle crappy to me. Anyone had a similar problems with a different resolution?
