Giving an "Auto" that "5 spd" look?!?! What do I need?

Someone posted pics of their civic where they installed the plastic boot just under the shift knob and it looked like a 5 spd. They also installed a shift knob like a 5 spd. would use and it looked pretty wicked :D

Anyhow, since I can not find any reverse indiglo gauges (that I like) for my LX, I figured I'll get this done for my b-day instead ;)

One question about the shift knob..... What about the button that is on the side of the OEM knob you press to shift the gears?

Thanks for any input on this!!!

PS >> If someone could post those pics, that would be nice :)

Where can I get this stuff for the best price?

hey did you check autodynamic.com, they have all kinds of silver reverse indilgow gauges.
i remember some guy having this on his car as well. you can find a type r auto shift knob at autodynamic.

http://209.87.151.155/transfer/dbimages/large/TR-AT-QS.jpg
http://209.87.151.155/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=TR-AT-QS

and then just look for any color boot to go with the color of your car and you are set.

oh and dont worry about the button on the side of the stock knob. there are screws you just unscrew and it pops right off. the new knob comes with a new spring and you just pop it right in there. and voila.:D

I purchased a shift boot from Honda and took out the PRND123 and replaced it with that. Looked like a manual but my car was an auto. Several show judges thought it was neat :)

The pic of the knob that rendog24 posted is cool, because you push the whole thing down, instead of the side button. All the side button does is push a piece of metal over with a kind of slit in it that pushes down the stick anyways, so it's all the same. Just unscrew the old one, and screw on the new one. Couldn't take more than a few minutes. :D

Is THIS (http://phixion.freewebspace.com/shiftknob.jpg) the look you are going for? ;) I have an auto tranny, I got a silver/gray shift boot, and that cool Type-R style (I'd prefer it not say it on the knob) knob for auto trannies, and viola, I got what you see in the pic in the link I put. I didn't do it to fool people into thinking I have a 5-speed, I did it because I'm trying to make my car into show car quality and I thought this look is astheticly pleasing to the eye, different, and cool. The knob at least when I got it was $20 plus shipping (not for me since I drove to their store and bought it :p ) but it's pretty reasonable. The knob works by the ENTIRE knob piece pushes down around the shaft of it. It's really neat. If you go to www.groupbuycenter.com there's a guy named "Futangklan" that sells the nice thick quality shift boot that I put on. Good luck with it! :D

Yeah... That CT-R knob is bordering on r-i-c-e so... the Razo knob would look much better. Recently, I went w/ a 2-tone shift boot from Fultangklan to accomapny my current shift knob. (You can find a pic of my shift knob in "My Homepage" below. Sorry, no updated pix yet...)

I did this with my 1993 Honda Civic Ex back in 1996. I sold that car back in 2000.

But I still autocrossed it and took numerous 1st places :)

Yeah, THAT (http://phixion.freewebspace.com/shiftknob.jpg) is what I want to do. But, I need to go with a black boot instead of white. I'll check groupbuy out and grab one. I'm not to crazy about anything that has Type R on it.

But, I do like this look:

http://us.st7.yimg.com/store2.yimg.com/I/streetbeatcustoms_1677_113126236

Thanks for the help on this. I figured the center console were generic for the civic.

LX98: Heres my shift boot on my 98 LX auto. I did it last year and was gonna get a knob right away but it looks pretty good like this. I still think I'll order a knob sooner or later. I got this from Honda, it's just a boot for a 96-98 manual, not Si. It just dresses it up much more and looks sportier.

just to let everyone know... these knobs use that push style instead of a button. and the guy said it would be about 42 bucks each plus shipping...

I just went to Autodynamic.com and they have a chrome and a gunmetal type-R shift knobs for $19.95 sale right now. Unfortunately they only take credit card and paypal, no money order. So I have to get my dad's ok before I get it. Good luck on that, lol.

If you can't find autodynamic, run a yahoo search for "automatic transmission shift knob".

Just unscrew and lift up your center floor console, remove your shift knob, then slip the boot over your shifter shaft, and put your console back together making sure you have it holding the bottom of the boot down, under it, and screw everything back together. :) Good luck with it.

I just got a white boot from futangklan off GBC. I have a 1996 honda civic auto. What do I use to secure the top part? Using a rubber band right now, but it looks ghetto. And how do I secure the bottom. There's no clips. Can I use hot glue or lquid nails or what?

tboyer
06-08-2002, 09:30 PM
secure the bottom? just put the console over it and stuff the boot down through.. thats securing it.

to secure the top, you can fold the top part of the boot under and put a rubber band around it UNDERNEATH and then fold the boot down over it and through the hole in the console. that way it won't look ghetto since you won't be able to see the rubber band

:flipa: no you dip.. rice is something like you're doing, making your automatic (fill in name of ANY vehicle here) LOOK like a manual.. that is just one aspect of rice. Do it to a camaro and I'll tell you the same thing.

Making something appear to be something it's not (like fast, a manual, etc). Hmm. sounds like rice to me.

How about instead of wasting time and money on making a car look like a manual or making it look fast, you actually make it a manual or make it fast? If i had the choice theres no way in hell I would be driving an automatic, it's so restrictive. Have any of you even driven a 5-spd before yearning for that "5-spd look"?

true. but 5-spd look shift knob+shift boot= $80
Swap the tranny=$thousands?
Buy a new car with manual=$tens and thousands?

i think most people here would get a real manual trasmission if they can. but for those who only have 10 bucks in their pockets like me. i had no choice to be "rice".

btw, what's wrong with being rice? :(

Barwick
06-13-2002, 03:19 PM
what's wrong with being rice? Are you kidding me? Rice is the reason why I get laughed at when I drive down the street with any moderate speed in my Civic. AND *#$@ING RICEBOYS ARE THE REASON IT HAPPENS.. because you go put your friggin' huge wings and 18" wheels and clear taillights and people think everyone who does ANY sort of modification to their Honda is a riceboy now.

have you ever driven a std. transmission? Trust me. if you're a true enthusiest, money is not an issue. I'd rather drive a stick POS than a nice automatic. after all, the power your engine makes passes through the transmission, and all that power goes to waste if used in an automatic. They're getting better, but driving a stick is incredible, and even that clutchless crap, F1, tiptronic etc can't even touch that.

if you haven't get a friend who has a manual car to teach you and you'll never go back...

Look, do whatever you want to your car, we'll always laugh at you and make fun of you for wasting your money on pointless stuff. "ooooh.. that car 'looks' fast.. how cool!!!" Give me a break. If it's not fast, it's not fast.

yes as i am 17. yes i could buy one but i have college and other things to worry about, i'm not going to be arrogant like some kid my age and blow thousands on cold air intakes, paint jobs, rims, etc to have a cool ride when i need money for college. Unlike some people, daddy is not paying for college for me. So right now im enlisting in the Air National Guard which will pay for 100% of college tuition but i still have room and board to pay for. But once i get out and i'm making $40,000 a year as an electrical engineer i'll buy a car and it certainly wont be an automatic. so before you judge get you're facts straight. my point is if you're serious enough about it, don't let money hold you back, save up responsibly and instead of getting some expensive mod swap trannys.

exactly. it's like being a supermodel but having no personality, no soul. It's takes away the excitement of driving, pushing it to the redline. It's the greatest feeling having all the power under your control, not just how much the automatic transmission wants to give you. They have torque converters which waste power, wasting your gas and speed. most use overdrive the entire time to save gas. Also, if you need to go up a hill its better to be in a lower gear, easy for a manual. And forget about downshifting to save your brakes, manual again. its cheaper to buy, it saves gas, it gives you complete control of the car, AND its more fun to drive. advantages of automatic transmissions? none. that is my point. in my opinion all of the above make a swap the first mod anyone should do.

i woulda gotten a manual civic and im kicking myself now for not doing it but i needed a car, i totaled my nissan sentra(xmas eve of 00) and all i could find around me for the amount i had and what was available was a 97 auto civic. i could do a swap but that'd cost too much. It'd just take money away from the next car i buy, which will be a Acura RSX 6 speed :)

nice, see there you go. if i had to stick it out(hah) with an auto, i'd save up as fast as i can and get a swap or a new car. damn that rsx would be nice though, i wish we had an acura dealer here. we have one up in chi-town but its too far to toe it for repairs its not very practical.
