Hi all! I am a new member and in desperate need of help for my ailing 2000 Chevy Blazer. It has $97,000 miles. It has auto trans, PS, AB brakes, power steering, cruise, AC, 4x4, 6 cylinder fuel injected. I live in GA and the problem did not start until I ran the AC. :screwy:

I have not had a problem in the past two years with this car until now. A week a go, I noticed when running the AC for a period of time, the transmission would start to shift hard and make a "clunking" noise. It seemed it was having difflcuty shifting. I took th car to a mechanic "friend" :disappoin who has always done great work in the past. He took out his code reader and said it was an "1870" code but to ignore the codes the dealer puts in since they mean nothing . He changed the tran fluid, screen, plugs, wires and charged me $285. Can doing all this avoid this code? Now the car is doing the same thing that it was before. He keeps telling me to bring the car back to him (he had it for 6 days) and he will clear the code and drive the car and if it continues he will continue to clear the code. I don't wnat the code cleared I want to know what is wrong with the car. Can anyone assist me with advice? Has anyone had this problem before? I have a friend who has a Jimmy and his vehicle did the same thing at 100,000 miles. He said a mehcanic told him that the code comes on automatically at close to 100k so you take your car in for service. :rolleyes: I love this car and it has been great up until now. I want to keep it going but I am very concerned about this code. Has anyone had this problem and do they know what needs to be done to solve it or how can it be diagnosed properly?

A code P1870 means that slipping has been detected. The most common cause is sticky valves in the valve body.

I bet you have probably seen examples in your own family. My father-in-law lived in Logan, WV for a while and he has told me of some of the things he saw. It causes some pretty strange birth defects.

The heater core flush procedure and blazerlt told me about the radiator caps. Since then I haven't had any more sludge problems.

Thats strange, was born and lived here for 20 years on and off, and have never seen any examples of it. Its just people like you who spout off your tales and stories that give places a bad name.

Just in case the answer got lost in the massive derail, I will repost it and elaborate.

When the computer senses a problem, it turns on the SES light and stores a code that indicates the problem. The code will keep coming back until the problem is fixed. You need to fix it, because ignoring a code and the problem it represents can cause permanent damage. The problem will need to be diagnosed by someone that knows what they are doing. A P1870 means that a transmission component is slipping. The most common cause for this code is sticky valves in the valve body.

This sounds like the coolant system needs to be flushed and serviced.

When the cooling system is no longer cooling properly or is hindered through contamination of improperly working components, the extra stres on all things it cools might cause a problem.

When the AC is on, it uses the cooling system as well. The extra load will increase the tranny fluid temperature, which will thin it out, which again will drop the transmission fluid pressure.

This could be the reason why the tranny will start to act up when you turn on the AC for a while.

1.) Flush the cooling system and install a new rad cap and coolant.

2.) Flush the tranny cooler in the rad. It has to be done every 5 years or so.
