Here are the rules/guidelines for the Drag Car Contest. Judging will be done by.

1. At this point, We will allow the entry of all dedicated drag type cars. From rail cars to bracket racers. Roll Cages are a plus.
2. Everything will be judged together in the following manner. The Judges votes will carry the most weight, with the winner by people’s choice being figured in.

3. Deadline is February 1st.
4. All entries must have an AF progress thread (to aid in judging!).
(we will waive the progress thread if your completed thread has adequate pictures and explaination)
5. Judging will be by a panel of judges ("People's Choice" by popular vote).
6. Prizes to be announced.
7. Multiple entries will be permitted (only two entries per person though).
8. Contest open to all builds. (change made to open up entries)

Judges are not permitted to win prizes, but may enter cars for exhibition purposes and for "Peoples Choice".
These rules may be tweaked as we go but the essentials will remain the same.

As time goes by progress threads of models being built for the comp will be added here. Just start a new thread(s) indicating it will be your entry and a link will be listed below.
For further discusion of this contest (and there is still a lot to discuss!) head over to this thread. Please PM me a link to your progress thread if I have not already harvested one. If you are visiting us from another forum, please, post a thread with your build. There is no need to “back log” the thread, just post a link to previous progress, and keep this thread updated as you would the thread on the original forum (copy and paste works great)

a couple of side notes, if i could get a mod, to sticky this for me that would be great. also as for judges, we have 2 thus far, Chris from Top End Miniatures, and 99 civic chic, i would like a minimum of 3 judges and a maximum of 5. anyone interested, or with recommendations please jump in. as this is mine and dave's first stab at a contest. any help will be appreciated

as for prizes, this is how it stands. Perry's Resin has put forth a 50 dollar gift certificate for the winner of 3 different categories and a 100 dollar gift certificate to an overall winner. and chris at top end miniatures has offered up one of his pro mod bodies of the winners choice, along with a decal sheet. by the november 1st deadline there should be several more bodies in his line up. thank you for the support guys. i have not decided how to break up the prizes yet, i am wanting to hold out and see what kind of response and entries we get, that way the categories can be divided fairly, so everyone has an even shot at winning. if anyone has suggestions on this, let me know.

1. Top Fuel/Funny Car: This one is self explanatory, and will include old school dragsters and the newer rail cars and funny cars as well.

2. Pro Mod: A Pro/Mod (in the states) is basically a machine with a body that has functioning doors (some being highly modified from their original stock appearance). All must have a certified double-rail chassis with a F/C style driver's cage made of 4130 chrome-moly steel tubing and all safety features found on a professional type of drag racing machine; parachutes, fire-suppression, four wheel disc-brakes, 5-point driver's harness, transmission ballistic blanket, blower restraint, engine diaper. There are three types of engines configurations used by the IHRA teams; supercharged on methanol, normally aspirated using racing gas and nitrous oxide injection, and EFI using racing gas and nitrous oxide. In the NHRA there is a fourth type of engine; twin-turbo running racing gas but no nitrous. Engines normally used are the big-block Chevy, Rodeck 481 T/FX, and the HEMI. In all of the organizations, the teams may use a planetary type of transmission (Lenco being the most common) but the supercharged cars are limited to a three-speed while the nitrous cars may use a four-speed. No five-speeds allowed. All teams use either Goodyear or Hoosier T/F slicks and front tires. Rear-suspension can be either a four-link or swing-arm with coil-over shocks. Front suspension is normally struts with R&P steering.

Some notes to help those of you that are entering the contest. If you want your supercharged engine to be correct, it should have only one magneto and one fuel pump. A supercharged Pro/Mod is nothing more than a Top/Alcohol Dragster or Funny/Car engine. For those of you that plan to do a nitrous motor, all of those teams use split Holley Dominator carbs on a sheet-metal tunnel-ram intake. The nitrous system consists of three-stages for the IHRA cars and up to four in the NHRA. Some of the nitrous cars are set-up to use the nitrous system to actuate the air-shifting mechanism.

These are IHRA regs.

Wheelbase: Minimum is 100" - Maximum is 115". Trucks (full-size) 140": S-10, Dakota, Ranger 125".

Front overhang (measured from the center of the front wheel to the front of the car) 43" unless factory OEM is longer.

Hood-scoop. May not exceed 13" above height of hood measured from base of hood-scoop.

Wheelie-bar length. Maximum 104" measured from center-line of rear-end housing to center of wheelie-bar wheel.

Minimum ground clearance: Front 3" and rear 12"

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I have tons of photos of these cars, especially those of Charles Carpenter, Pat Dohtery, and Mitch Stott.
Thank you Chris at Top End Miniatures (top_end_miniatures@charter.net)

3.Door slammers/ProStock (tub cars) (carb cars) this would cover super stock
to Prostock, plus a lot of bracket cars. Just about any sportsman type drag class would fit in here, if you want to take an old 57, tub it, throw a cage and a blower in it, this is where it would go.

4. Tuner: This is for you import guys, been dreaming about that scratchbuilt civic, with the sinister slicks up front, that Supra with the Big Single. Here is your home.

Ok, these categories are still up in the air, but I believe this covers all of our bases, I would imagine that categories 3 and 4 will change. I forsee the need to split 3 up because I feel it will be our largest one, and 4 will more than likely be rolled into another division as I don’t expect a whole lot of tuner cars in this one. But maybe I will be wrong. So, lets get those progress threads started, and get this thing under way!!!!!!!!

Lookin good with all the rules set up. Once I get the digital camera card reader hooked up again, I'll start getting that progress thread under way.

I'll have a '55 Chevy Nomad in category number 3.

Just to clarify, pro mods didn't get tubbed until the late 70s, and super stock never is, so I think non-tubbed cars would be acceptable in category 3 too.

I'll have a progress thread up in a couple days! :)

1. At this point, We will allow the entry of all dedicated drag type cars. From rail cars to bracket racers. We will exclude anything with a full interior. Roll Cages are a plus.

exclude full interior cars? so no 1960's super stock cars? they are full interior cars with no roll bars back in the day...

basic super stock rules are here.

Ya I wanted to comment on that too... 70s Super Stock and Pro Stock entries were gutted, no carpeting, no door PANELS (but still full doors, ie. no skins) and the stock dash had to be in place... you could do whatever you wanted TO the dash (ie. aluminum panel, remove and add gauges) but the factory dash had to be in place...

White97ex, I finally made it over. :grinno:

As far as your invite to participate in the competition, at this point I would have to decline due to a conflicy of interest. Chris, from TEM and I are good friends and I currently do a lot of work mastering parts for Chris and Top End Miniatures. Based on these facts it would be unethical for me to compete.
I would, however, offer my services as a judge, if you are still looking for such a person.
Let me know.

P.S., I'm glad to finally be here and it seems that there is a lot that I have been missing.

welcome wayne. we would love to have you onboard as a judge, after seeing your builds, and you tearing apart my mustang. lol. (no hard feelings, simply constructive criticism) You will make an excellent judge, welcome aboard.

tigeraid and JT. thank you for pointing that out. i just was trying to avoid people throwing together a stock build and trying to enter it. if anyone else finds a discrepancy like this let me know!!

So my Mustang project has taken a turn for the worst, I think I'm in over my head in terms of keeping it in a stock class... Nothing about the front frame section fits the engine, and I'm gonna hafta hog out the wheelwells a bit to fit the tires. Is it OK if I change my entry to just plain "drag car" ? :D

white97ex
09-11-2005, 01:58 PM
fine by me. lol. I don't think we will classify these things until they are all finished. We are losing a lot of interest. we have picked up a person or two. I know that Dave is still working on his 57. Davey's Top Fuel Rail is still an expected entry. My mustang is finished and ready to roll. My Corvette, It is all depending on how quickly it gets cast and returned so it is up in the air. We have Jurva's TT escort. NasTone has a couple entries in the works. Not sure where he is on those things. drnitrus is still working on his civic drag car.

If you are in the contest or are interested still. We have just shy of 2 months left. Enough time to put something together if you have not started. For those who have, please, leave us some sort of response in this thread and let us know where you are with your project. I would like to get an idea of everyone who is still making a run for the finish. I need to contact our sponsors and make sure that they are still on board. If a moderator could update the title of the thread for me, and have it say Drag Car Contest sponsored by Top End Miniatures and Perry's Resin. UPDATED 9/11/05

Thanks
Russell

Well, my Mercury is almost complete. I decided to remove the side moldings and repaint the body. I am also working on the '66 Nova, but I won't consider this an entry for the contest yet. I don't know if I will have time to finish it. The Mercury will be complete by the deadline. If we extend it, so be it - that is fine with me.

There are some really cool projects being done here but no new updates in quite a while. :banghead: It appears from above that the deadline has been extended. well, having just received my corvette body, I will not be entering it into the contest. I don't see an end in the near future. I will be entering my mustang.

I regret to announce, that we have apparently lost perry's resin as a sponsor. I tried on numerous occasions to update them, with no response. The contest has fallen flat on its face. I hate to say. We lost a lot of enthusiasm not long after it started. HOWEVER it WILL NOT be abandoned. The voting and judging will proceed as planned. I was planning on providing some sort of award out of pocket. I have come into some financial woes, as I was hit on the driver's side of my truck last week and it was totalled. So most all of my extra cash will be going toward a down payment on a new vehicle. But, I will come up with something that is worth the effort you guys have put into this contest. I thank each and everyone of you who have stuck with your projects and made a and will make a big push to the end!

white97ex
01-18-2006, 04:53 PM
I'm going to try. but no guarantees.

I'll clean out the entry list on the first page, deleting everyone who has not responded to my pm's and leaving those with completed models.

white97ex
01-18-2006, 05:00 PM
there are at this point 9 possible entries with 4 completed. I pm'd privateer and lotus man. If I dont recieve a response soon, they will be removed from the list as well.

Now, here is our dilema. With such a small turn out. we can't very well break the classes up. If anyone has any input on this please feel free. I might be able to secure some sort of prize from TEM. But Perry's Resin is definately out, since I have heard nothing from them since I first contacted them.

If we decide to do a single judged category, simply as drag vehicles.

first, second, and third place will be rewarded for their efforts. I am not sure how yet. I will do my best to make it worth the effort that was put into these models

white97ex
01-31-2006, 07:21 AM
Alright Guys. Today is the last day to get your submissions in. Hopefully we pick up another entry or two. But it is looky pretty shaky. Here is how it will work. A panel of 3 judges will judge the cars (unsure of the format as of yet).

We will also have a peoples choice, Judged by the members here at AF in the same fashion as AFMOTY, however it will be ranked 1-4 as there are only 4 entries. 4 points for first, 3 for sencond, and so on. I'm not sure how I will weight the judges score versus the peoples choice yet. But like I said previously, I will try and put forth some sort of Award for the winners. Everyone will hopefully get SOMETHING for their efforts.

I will go through the threads tonight when I get home, and pull a suitable representational photo from each build to put into the peoples choice thread. If you want to throw together a photochop of several pictures of your build (I have one of mine) E-mail them to me at r_d_butler@sbcglobal.net I will host them on my photobucket site and post them in the thread. Keep the limit within the viewable page. I don't want people to have to scroll left and right.

Any questions, EMAIL me. please.
