I got a 91 Merc Capri, and the alternator went bad. I am a poor college student who thinks he can do everything on his own. I got the alternator disconnected from the motor, but now i can't get it out of the engine bay. There is NO space big enough to pull the alternator out of the car! I need to know if there is something i have to remove from the motor or its surroundings before i can remove the alternator. HELP!!!!!!!
Thanks,
Adam

Hey adam,
I am having some serious alternator problems too, but mine wont charge at all. And I've tried 5 new alts. Anyway, the correct way to get it out is to pull the half shaft out of the tranny. Thats a very big pain in the butt. What i did on mine was since my a/c is not working i just unbolted the a/c lines just before they go through the firewall then pull them back out of the way. Then you have to take off a unit thats sits above the alt on the intake manifold i don't know what its called. It has some 1 inch (approx.) vacuum lines and one 1/4 inch coolant line and a snap on plug. And its held on with one 12mm nut and one 12mm bolt. after removing all that just set it out of the way. It will still have a coolant line on the other side that theres no need to remove. Now you should be able to bring it up and out of the area you just made. Sounds alot hardwer than it really is. Since i've put on 5 alts. now i've got it down to about 20 mins. from start to finish. Have you heard about any charging problems with the 1991 capri? I've done everything i can think of including taking it to the dealer. All they wanted to do was charge me 525.00 for a factory alt. Ummm.... NO!
Good luck hope that helps.
