water & spark plugs, NOT GOOD MATCH; HELP!exman98 06-29-2005, 01:13 AM 1998 ex civic (d16y8) manual w/ about 116,000 miles. OK her is my biggest mistake I have ever made. I know I am stupid so you don't have to remind me. About 6 months ago I bought a new wire set, the cheap ricer APC brand. "9.3mm High performance silicone cable wire set" blab bla bla and replaced the spark plugs as well (NGK .044) Now the Mistake!! The other day I was finally got around to cleaning the engine bay. I sprayed the "Green" clean stuff and let is set for about 10 min. I just used a low pressure garden hose to wash it off, not a power washer I thought that the rubber spark plug cap would was stopped the water from getting in but it didn’t. And I did not know it. I was in a big hurry to get to work and did not notice anything at first. But after about 45 sec. everything started to feel sluggish. By that time it was a downhill cost to work. The check engine light came on and I was sputtering (low RPM's). It sat for a few hours while I was at work but I quickly figured out what the problem was. WATER GOT DOWN IN WHERE THE SPARK PLUGS SIT. There was little puddles in each tube but I was able to get it out, reset the computer to turn the light off and drove off with no problems. The next day it felt sluggish in low RPM's in second gear. I checked the plugs again but saw no problem but to be safe I changed them. The old plugs seemed to be fine. I reset the computer again. Now tonight I went up into higher RPM's and about 2 min. later the light came on again. The owner’s manual said to "drive moderately until the dealer has inspected the problem." I know if I go to get it checked out it will cost at least $50 and then if theirs something actually wrong, well I'm sure I will be raped. The car seems to run fine now; I think I might have only messed up the sensor. I have never used the dealer for any other mantanaice. I am the third owner to this car. Has any one experienced this before, do you think there is actually damage? What to do ?? PLEASE HELP!! superbluecivicsi 06-29-2005, 02:44 AM if water got down in your cylinders, that means you didnt tighten them good enough. if your plugs were tightened good, then the water would have just evaporated when the engine got hot. when you sprayed water, did you cover your dizzy? stop resetting the codes and pull them instead. they are there to tell what your problem is. 89ZCCivic 06-29-2005, 04:29 AM if water got down in your cylinders, that means you didnt tighten them good enough. if your plugs were tightened good, then the water would have just evaporated when the engine got hot. when you sprayed water, did you cover your dizzy? stop resetting the codes and pull them instead. they are there to tell what your problem is. agree , if you keep reseting the the comp. your always ganna have the same problem .check which code it its so you can replace the part thats damage . exman98 06-29-2005, 10:13 AM I know the plugs were tightend good that is why i think it is just a bad sensor. so pritty much i will just have to get it hooked up to a machine to read the code. bronxblaza117 06-29-2005, 10:26 AM dosent autozone read the code for free? exman98 06-29-2005, 11:05 AM i will check that out. the best i can find on the internet was " On others the ECU is somewhere in the vicinity of the passenger side footwell and the codes are retrieved by observing the Check Engine light on the dash." my dash is not flashin. it has only blinked once exman98 06-29-2005, 12:28 PM i just got the code read, and it said P0420 "catalyst eff below thrust bank l" they said my Cat got meesed up. maybe some type of deposite. i am getting everything checked out for $45 at a local shop today. they should tell my what if wrong this afternoon. maybe the water thing and this thing was just pure misfotune. we will see but i know the car is still sluggish. the cat might be the actaul problem exman98 06-29-2005, 07:55 PM the shop said my o2 sensor went out and that messed up my cat.( that is why my car was sluggish). all and all they said it will be $450. i dont know is that bad superbluecivicsi 06-30-2005, 03:07 AM pick one off ebay and do it yourself. exman98 06-30-2005, 07:55 AM i would love to but i have no means or way to do it silvrcvik 07-04-2006, 11:52 AM buy cat off ebay....buy ramps at autozone....get wrench...proceed....dont forget your ebrake.. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
