Intermittent problem started about 2 weeks ago. Camry idles at about 1500 rpms then jumps down to around 400 500 then up to 900. Also, will jump in and out of overdrive. Are these two problems related? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a vacuum leak ... check all the hoses first

Problem getting worse. Car stalled twice today. RPM's staying at 1500. When car started, there was a strong smell of gas coming from the exhaust.

Well...Problem fixed. Turned out to be a two problems. I changed the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. This took care of the stalling. As for the high RPM's, it was the Coolant Temperature Sensor. The sensor was not functioning properly, therefore the ECU was getting the message that the engine was cold, and was sending a rich mixture to the engine.

Wow, 1500's a fairly high idle. My car idles at ~700RPMs. Mine's a 90, so not much difference there.
