I bought this kit in december '03 from e-bay.de for about 60€ (A really good deal, if you ask me :smokin:). And after I opened the box, I knew I had to detail it. The kit has already so many details, it's perfect for a super-detailed build. I searched through the web and found a detailset for this kit from Perfect Parts. With the cost of 140$, It's not cheap but from the opinion of many model builder's worth every cent. But the disappointment came quick. These sets are all sold out and out of production...(they pop up on ebay from time to time but for hundreds of dollars). There was no way to build it without the set so I waited and then in summer '04 I got the message about the re-release of the Perfect Parts sets. I quickly pre-ordered a set and after a long wait the sets arrived this week. :iceslolan

And today I started to build the kit. I haven't done much, only some fitting tests and I removed all the mold lines and injection marks from the engine parts. I will take some pics in the next few days after I sprayed some layers of primer.

But of course, every thread is useless without pics :grinno:, so I took some pics of all kit parts and of course from some of the aftermarket parts.

This is a set of vacuformed windshields for 1/12 Tamiyas McLaren MP 4/6, Williams FW-14B, Ferrari 641/2 from Chevron (out of production). This will replace the out of scale windshield from the kit. (maybe the only bad thing about the kit)

I have 30+ more pics of all the detail parts that I will use for this kit but I think it would be better to post them with the progress pics after I used them.

Ok, one more thing, This will be a really long build !!! And I still have to finish my S2000...

Hi,

Will be watching this build closely. I've got the same kit and the Perfect Parts Brakes & Detail set arrived a couple of weeks ago.

Where did you get the Finisher's Paints from ?

Holy cow! Those Perfect Parts sets are awesome! The boxes make me think there's jewellery inside... just as expensive I suppose, but they do look worth the money.

You're certainly going all out with the detail for this kit - but isn't it fun to buy virtually ALL the detail kits available on the planet, knowing the high standard of finished product you'll have in the end.

Looking forward to this build TS111, and don't forget to put up lots and lots and lots and lots of pics for us all! Good luck!

Ron, from Racingminiatures, told me that they think about it and there is a good chance that a FW 14B set will be released.

Hey Bil,

great that your're here, I have one more question about your McLaren :iceslolan , do you placed all the photoetched nuts, bolts and washers above the original mold in plastic ones (for example on the valve covers) or do you removed the plastic ones?? And how do you glued all the tiny photoched nuts, bolts and washers? super glue, kristal klear or something different?

many thanks

In some cases, yes, the photoetch bolts went over the exisiting plastic ones and some were not. There is over 550 photoetch nuts, bolts and washers on my MP4/6, so I really can't remember which one was which way!!! I use CA to glue then all down...As a side note, I barely used any of the Perfect Parts nuts, bolts and washers. Mostly Model Car Garage, Scale Motorsports and Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland.

Ok but now back to the progress, as I said in my first post, I started on the engine. I removed the mold lines and cleaned some of the engine parts. And I primed them yesterday but I'll have to do some more sanding because I simply forgot some mold lines :loser: Anyway, here are the first pics of the Honda Engine

Not much to show you guys, but I worked on the valve covers and painted the engine black. A very important thing are the Honda logos on the valve covers. I decided to use the original letters (not the PE Parts from the PP set), I simlpy covered them with Bare Metal Foil Aluminium and then sprayed some layers black. (after the paint has fully dried, I will carefully sand until I get a nice aluminium shine :grinno:)

The Honda "H" Logo, looks a bit weird, don't know why. It looks perfect in "real"...

next update,

I lightly sanded the Honda Letters on the valve covers to bring back the shine from the BMF Aluminium but the worst case scenario happened. I fu**ed up the Honda logos on both sides... :loser: I am still not sure how to fix this, maybe I will just apply BMF on the Honda logo and paint it or I will remove the complete paint (brake fluid will do the job...)

Anyway here are some pics, BTW you can see the structured finish as on the real car.

Cheers,

It is normal semi gloss black (from Revell) sprayed with high air pressure (about 2,8 Bar) + some really light coats of paint.

BTW I just put the 2 covers in brake fluid to remove the paint. I will re-do them. I wasn't quite satisfied with the surface of the BMF after sanding. For my next try I will spray a layer of clear after I applied the BMF, so I don't have to sand the foil, only the clear coat (and it's easier not to damage the foil :iceslolan) I hope that works... :grinno:

Yeah I know. I've also dunked parts, even whole bodies into DOT 4 due to being unhappy. I sometimes think we become our own worse critics. I'm building an S2000 right now, and even now I'm looking at it, thinking - that should be better.

It's a great idea you have going, so lets hope this time around its just how you want it. I remember this kit when I was a lot younger, it's actaully an old kit now, and I remember it being very expensive. I will continue to watch this progress thread, as I'm keen to see this one in superb detail build up.

Good luck mate..

BAD NEWS...

As I said before I re-painted the valve covers but they turned out horrible... I don't know why but after painting it kinda "reacts with the plastic", maybe it has something to do with the brake fluid (but I never had problems before). Anyway I tried to remove it again but it's even worse, I can't use them anymore (maybe the side with the throttle linkage would be ok but it isn't perfect anymore...), they're completly messed up... I knew I will mess up something sooner or later but this is way to early..:disappoin

So if anyone has a spare or replacement set of the valve covers, parts E14 and E15 (or maybe the complete sprue E :grinno), and wants to help me out, please write me a pm or a e-mail. Any help would be great.

BTW Does anyone know if I can get these parts from Tamiya (this kit is quite old...)??

thanks in advance

I can't see anyone giving their own pieces to you though, surely they'd need them themselves.

Yes, thats the problem :grinno:! But the idea was if someone ordered a "E Sprue" as a replacement and needed only some parts and has the valve covers left, okok...I am just dreaming :iceslolan :iceslolan

next update

I mainly worked on the exhaust and as you can see in the pics there were mold lines and injection marks everywhere...horror... :evillol: I sanded over an hour and I haven't even finished one side. I will spray some layers primer on the first parts tomorrow and hope they are ok... after that it's time to add some weld seams.

And I test fitted some AN fittings on the engine and gearbox. At first I wanted to use Modeler's AN fittings but I wasn't happy with the result so I decided to use Sakatsu machined aluminium AN Fittings, they are much better. Anyway this still needs some time, pics will follow later.

The exhaust is divided in 3 main parts, front, rear, and one part were the other two come together. The mold in connectors are removed. They will be replaced with other parts later.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/88/52588/6632383966343564.jpg

left parts cleaned, right ones only removed from the tree...horrible :grinno: These are the only parts were you can see that this kit is from 1991.

Decs0105

Ok finally some more progress pics

I mainly worked on the exhaust which is really frustrating...these mold lines are just annoying...sand, primer, sand, primer, still not perfect, sand, primer, sand...ahhh getting crazy anyway the exhaust is a real eye catcher on this car :grinno:

As I said before, I replaced the original connectors with aftermarket parts from Sakatsu (Air Jack valve, AN Fittings), I simply drilled a hole and inserted the part.

I also prepared some more parts for the engine that will be painted today.

And a very important thing at the end, I got an answer from Tamiya, they will send me the replacement parts within the next 8-10 Days :grinno:

That's good news that you got the parts.. I'm saving up for this kit, as HLJ.com have it in stock... I just hope I can get one in time.. Even with the mold lines this is looking very good.. You have a very keen eye, and your detail work is superb.

First steps from the rear suspension assembly
Stock parts (the black ones) are replaced with aluminium shock bodies from the Perfect Parts detail set. The numbers on the shock bodies are written with a Gundam marker super fine (0,04mm).

still in progress, the plastic parts need to be painted black, but you get an idea how it's looks...

What numbers are you referring to?

That PP set looks quite amazing. Too bad it's so expensive and even so it's always "out-of-stock"...I can't wait to see some new photos of your build. I was inspired by Bil's work, but yours isn't any less great ;)

Cheers,
Pedro.
