Tire Question.SkiNutJones 06-09-2005, 09:05 PM Does anyone know how big of a tire will fit on the stock rims? I dont want something huge just a little wider with more grip then the stock pos goodyears. Also any suggestions would be great. Thanks! tech_ed 06-10-2005, 05:44 PM What's you're idea of stock? My mom made a really nice chicken stock...went really good with some potatoes and veggies... You need to give more info as to what stock you are talking about (model, year, existing tire size, possibly existing rim size...) But, you will have to be aware that the rim size will not be the limiting factor...there's the fender to worry about and you may rub when you crank the wheel hard against the lock (adjusting the bump-stops helps prevent this, but hinders the turning radius) So, more info please! Ed web/gadget guru SkiNutJones 06-11-2005, 03:21 PM My stock tires are 225/27/16, and its an 04 lerado. I dont want to really change anything other then the tire. If I can keep the rim it would be great. I'm not planning on a suspension lift either maybe just the spring blocks, so thats only a 2" lift. Thanks for any help. tech_ed 06-11-2005, 08:21 PM OK. Here is a good resource: http://www.800-923-jeep.com/techCorner/tires.cfm This shows that a Grand Cherokee (which is a laredo) can tak 29 X 9.5 tires with no suspension mods. BUT Be aware!!!!! These computer controlled cars don't take too well to changing tire sizes. Two thing (at least) will happen: 1) your speedometer (and odometer) will be off by at least 5 mph. You will be traveling FASTER than your speedometer says you are. 2) your gas mileage will begin to suck. If you get 17mpg, expect 13-15mpg. If you get 13mpg, expect to get 8-10 mpg. And, most tire stores will NOT put on bigger tires than is stated by the manufacturer. It's a liability issue... So, if you can find a shop that will put the tires on, and you get the speedometer recalibrated and the computer reconfigured, and don't mind a 10% reduction in gas mileage, then you should have no problems fitting a 29 X 9.5 tire under your wheel wells... Ed web/gadget guru SkiNutJones 06-11-2005, 10:11 PM thanks man! IdahoJeeper 06-13-2005, 04:25 AM Or give this a try: http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit ramairgto72 06-15-2005, 04:31 AM I would also look into a factory lift, or the "Up Country" package, you even get a cool sticker for your car. That lift will give you just over a inch of lift. SkiNutJones 06-15-2005, 03:09 PM Well if it comes with a sticker I'm getting it. haha Thanks for the advice. SkiNutJones 06-15-2005, 03:18 PM Hey Idaho. I put numbers of tires that I would like to go with. How do I know if they work out. I understand what they all are, but I dont know what the tolerances are, or what will actually work. Again these arnt huge differences in size. I have a 225 75/16 and I'm looking at the 245 70/16 so its only a little shorter and wider. The Diameter difference is only 0.75%. So I'm guessing that it is ok. ramairgto72 06-16-2005, 12:30 AM Can I ask why your changeing to shorter wider tires? I have never been one of those guys that can spout out numbers of tires and how they fit on each car, However most rim shops do and those are the poeple I have called in the past, I think thats your best bet. the sticker, LOL I was reading on the net about how to change over to the "Up Country" package and they were allways so happy about the sticker, one guy got 4 of them and added them all over his JGC, thats a little over the top for me,...... ones nice lol IdahoJeeper 06-16-2005, 02:27 AM Hey Idaho. Hoping to get a little more sidewall and width, I was planning on 235/70/R16 for my next set, which is 9.25in wide and 28.95in tall. This tire is about 2% bigger which means a small diference in speedo reading and about 1/2in more width. The 245/70/R16 is ACTUALLY somewhat larger at 9.64in wide and 29.5 tall. Thats about a 4% difference from stock. Note TechEd's comments above about fitting the 29X9.5 on the Grand. The chart in his link shows it'll fit onto stock (which you can verify by turning your front wheels to their far limits and measuring the clearances), but there are drawbacks. If your going for the look or function of larger tires, I say go for it. Take a look at SteveBo's GC in this thread, sweet set-up: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=412829 His 265/70R16 ATs are roughly the same as a 10.5X30 (which is exactly what I ran on my XJ before it was destroyed). But see, he's lifted and I'll bet there's a small chance he rubs on tight turns. It's your Jeep man, just remember -balance in all things, GrassHopper. Let us know what you decide, then post a pic when you get back from the tire store! SkiNutJones 06-16-2005, 11:28 PM Can I say that you guys are awesome. I've been on other forums before and the people there just talk crap about each other, and never really like to help people that dont know much. As far as the tires go. I need to save up some cash the tires I'm looking at are going to run about $550 mounted and balanced. Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo Let me know if you guys have heard anything about these tires. I allways get my tires through tirerack and these looked the best. But, I will have them soon and I will put some pics up. Thanks again. SteveB05 06-17-2005, 02:21 AM I do rub on hard turns when I'm flexing the suspension...say climbing a rock while turning. I had 245/70R16 on at the stock height and that rubbed under turns like say pulling into a parking space. Not really bad, but something you had to be aware of. SteveB05 06-17-2005, 02:26 AM Oh and BTW...I love the dueler ATs. They have a great ride and do pretty good for general trail riding. Thats all I've had on all my trucks and I've never had a set wear out before 30,000 miles. ramairgto72 06-17-2005, 01:19 PM I can't say I have 4x4ed a Dueler however I have used them when I was in HS on my 72 LeMans, and they fell apart, mind you I was beating them with burn outs, and sideways skids, the only good thing I can say is that they didnt peel off the rim during a 50mph left turn that only took out a stopsign.....(I don't know how I made it out of HS alive). By the way they don't like plastic recycleing cans and they dig in gravel out side of airports LOL SkiNutJones 12-12-2005, 05:08 PM Update finally! I had to break down and buy tires, the old ones were balder then my grandpa. I did end up getting the Dualer A/T Revo so far these tires are awesome. We got 10 inches of snow about an hour after I got them and let me tell you the performance was amazing. I did get the 245/70's and they really look better then the stock they fill the wheel well much butter. I already have about 600 miles on them, went skiing. No road noise, no lose in milage, plenty of traction considering that the roads were awefull. I did get to do a little playing with them too, my buddies wife put her truck into the side of their garage so I "had to" drive through the yard and ditch to get out of the driveway through 10" of snow. No problems! If anyone is looking for tires I would totally recommend them, so far. I'll let you know after a few thousand. I might get a job out in Utah and if so I'll have to pull a trailer full of my stuff out there. I'll post how that goes too. tech_ed 12-12-2005, 06:08 PM Good choice. I have a set of these on one of my XJs (90 sport), and a set of BFGs on my 89 xj-ltd...Honestly? While I love the BFGs on my 72 cutlass convertible, and they are excelent on my Jeep, I think that on my other jeep (yeah, I have 3 xj's) I'll get the revos again when these tires need replacing..Although I have the K&N cone filter and a flowmaster exhaust, those noises aren't as annoying as the roadnoise I get from tires...it's the constant steady whirring that lulls you to sleep. The revos have gone everywhere my BFGs have gone and they look nice on a Grand Cherokee...They're agressive yet they don't "look" agressive... Ed web/gadget guru SkiNutJones 12-12-2005, 10:14 PM I bought them from tire barn, and with it they included free rotation, balance every 5k, and a 3yr 50k warrenty. The guy warned me not to forget about the rotating and balancing because they will start to make a lot of noise if you dont do it regularly. Flaviano 12-13-2005, 09:25 AM I would also look into a factory lift, or the "Up Country" package, you even get a cool sticker for your car. That lift will give you just over a inch of lift. when you say "up country" to the dealer, is it just a set of coils or should there be more? obviously, i understand the coils are different, but is that all? Goldfishy 12-17-2005, 10:52 PM I've been running new larger Michelin Cross Terrains (245-70-16) for a couple of months, no problems and the quietest ride. I had the 225's (70-16), same brand with almost 68,000 mi. on them previously with more tread still left on them but Costco had the $60 off sale so purchased them then. There's been no noted decreased in gas mileage nor speed difference. In my area, there are computerized speed limit radars, and same numbers noted on my speedometer. The Michie's cost more, but last longer. I never run them in snow, so can't compare to the Duelers. But for snowboarding time, the cables go on. SkiNutJones 03-13-2006, 11:55 PM Another Update! The tires are still holding up extremely well. I'm now at about 15K and still looking great. Took them Mudding for the first time this past weekend. Let just say that I was the only truck that didnt get pulled out of something! When we got to the pit there were three guys walking out because they had their ranger sitting on its frame. I yanked them out and then showed them how to do it. Good times! My buddy put his Jeep into a very deep hole, and I was able to pull him out with no problems. I have to say that the tires made things happen. To recap: Awesome on the road, in deep snow, and in the mud. I know I will, and do recommend these tires to anyone that wants a tire mostly for the road, but can still kick ass when you want to play! Eldolac 03-14-2006, 01:07 AM Does anyone know how big of a tire will fit on the stock rims? I dont want something huge just a little wider with more grip then the stock pos goodyears.
