strong gasoline smellne84elcamino 06-03-2005, 09:38 PM My 84 El Camino stock 305 4bbl Quadrajet, automatic transmission, has a very strong gasoline smell after it has been driven then turned off. I cannot see any leaks, but it seems to be coming from the carburetor area. Anybody know how to fix this? I had the same problem for a long time until someone suggested it was the fuel pump....yup it was. bobss396 09-15-2005, 08:01 AM Look for a leak at the fuel inlet at the carb first. Also q-jets have soft plugs at the bottom of the fuel bowls, they are notorious for leaking and dumping gas into the manifold. Check your throttle linkage and return spring for a bind, make sure it fully closes when the engine is off.
