Auto climate control

Just bought a 1993 Royale LSS. Love the engine - great ride for a 13 year old car, but... The automatic climate control outside temp blinks for about 3 minutes at start up and the AC won't work. Fuses are OK, but even the little snowflake won't light up on the panel. A couple of people suggested the refrigerant being low would make the computer shut the compressor down to prevent damage. So here's my question....does this sound right? Should I just give it a top off for a start? And finally, the manual doesn't say what refrigerant is in the 93...any ideas?

Any help is much appreciated....the spring has been pretty cool in MA, but those leather seats are going to get hot in a hurry...!!!!

Don't quote me but mom's 93 olds 88 took r-12 she had it converted to r-134a. Should be the same. It should say on the tag under the hood. The one that talks about emissions

My mechanic suggested that I disconnect the battery to let the computer reset itself 5-10 minutes and then test the a/c. The little snowflake came on and then we added the r12

It's worth a try I guess....But what made it go out in the first place?

The flashing temp indicator for the first 2-3 mins means there are trouble codes stored in the climate control head. They can be reset with an OBD1 scanner or by disconnecting the battery for at least a half an hour.
