Turboing my car!neuspeedracer 05-31-2005, 12:20 AM i have decided to Turbo my KA over doing a SR20DET because of high psi and because of the cheaper budget. I am not going to buy a kit, I have decided to buy my own turbo and putting together my own kit. The problem is, is that i have never installed a turbo, and i was wondering if someone could give me a list of parts that i will be needing for the complete install? And I was wondering if someone has ever Turboed their 240 and how much it ran them as well as was it worth attempting. thanks a bunch guys. neuspeedracer 05-31-2005, 12:49 AM i was also wanting to know which turbo would be a good choice i heard turbonetics makes good turbos, but not sure which ones best/easiest to install. nissan_240sx 05-31-2005, 01:11 AM I know some parts you'll need. An exhaust manifold for the turbo (some people custom make theirs), down pipe (some also custom), oil feed line, piping(again sometime custom made), BOV (blow off valve) and the turbo itself. not too sure about the turbo size. hope this helps. p.s. dont blow anything up lol :p LaYzIeNoY 05-31-2005, 01:23 AM you forgot intercooler most kit contain, oil feed/return lines and a way to connect them, you might be able to just get those to make it a little easier i hear t03/4e i believe thats the name are good, they are the hybrid turbos scottsee 05-31-2005, 01:38 AM im not a nissan guy, but my areas full of bov questions and bodykit threads. 2 parts to a turbo fuel/airflow. Fuel: if you decide to buy a new pump try and get one that matches the GPH flow rate close to your 90% IDC. you can go huge on the fuel pump but most people will tell you that the larger you go the safer you are, regardless if you buy a larger GPH fuel pump you'll requilre an ajustable fpr that has both up/down settings to set your base fuel pressure back to its static pressure. aermotive make a good one, they have 1:1 boost ratios and use AN fittings to insure proper sealing and it leaks alot less then some others out there. im not really sure if your fpr's have return lines, but you'll need one for all that extra fuel. and if your going through all that trouble just rewire your fuel pump to get 12.5 - 13v to the pump. the more volts you get to the pump the better it flows. the injectors you use should be purchesed after you decide on the turbo you'll use. and agian, its not smart to flow your injectors more then 90% IDC with boost. people debate the issue, but i dont feel like going into that right now. a quick cheat sheet: 500cc injectors on .76 fuel specific gravity pump gas with a target AFR of 12:1 will flow 31.7 GPH and 40.1lb/min MAX airflow. just for reffrence the walbro 190 fuelpump at 12.5 volts flows around 44 GPH at 15psi, and basicly drops around 1 GPH for each additional psi. and of course you'll need a air/fuel controller to mannage the larger injectors. i really have no idea about whats out there for nissans. in the dsm world there are gmmaft's, aem, vps, dsmlink, safc, emanage, dsmchip, and a few others. but you'll need somthing to compensate for those larger injectors. airflow is more of a problem. its not always static. and to get max airflow (volemetric effency) out of your engine you can spend alot of $. so the best way to help you on this one is to ask you what turbo you'll be running, what kind of boost, compression ratio, and cylinder head combustion volume (have you milled the head) you have. being on a cheap budget i'd emangin you'll be going on a stock setup. at the veary least try and get a cometic head gasket and arp head studs for the head. if you can aford the extra $200 it will strenthen one of the weakest links in boosting. Airflow: airfilter: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/airfilter.html (neat little equation) intake pipe: you can use anything from PVC pipe to 300 name brand products, they all do exactly the same thing. its probably the one thing you can cheat quality a bit to save $. Tubro: check the airlfow maps, get a turbo that will work for your engine, and goals, try to keep effency island close to 2bar (14-15psi), and the effency at 78% intercooler: bar/plate-tube/fin, agian your looking for airflow will as little pressure drop and effency as possable. http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/intercooler.html Bov are important, compressure surge is bad news, i dont even know if that engen has a map or maf. so i'll just mention that you can recirulae if you want to keep spool up durring shifts or run atmisperic if your mas/maf hasnt caculated airvolume, density, trough the hotwire yet. i'll let somone else go their. but you'll need somthing on your upic pipe to releave positive air pressure in the pipes. Head: i'll leave to somone who knows more about this engine Manifold / o2 housing: Same, simple 45min port and swirle polish will help eliminate boost creep. Exhaust: bigger the better. 3in turbo back. Electronics/gauges: Boost gauge, DO NOT get a air/fuel light show gauge unless you get a full wideband 02 setup. its pointless, useless, and you'll be made fun of =) air/fuel controller, logging software. and if you can aford it an EGT gauge. dont skimp out on this stuff, it means the diffrence between a well running engine and a broken one. im sure this was a waist of my time. but i hope you might have got somthing out of it. at least i got a chance to talk about somthing other then body kits and neon lights. neuspeedracer 05-31-2005, 12:13 PM good lord, thats a lot of information. well i think im set on getting a T3 turbo, but does anybody have a write up of their turbo installment? Or does anyone know where i can find a write up on this? I dont want to mess anything up and i want it to be set and done right so i wont have problems in the future. thanks again guys. nissanfanatic 05-31-2005, 02:37 PM www.ka-t.org Lots of info there. I have posted my setup a million times. Just search. Chuki_breath 05-31-2005, 07:36 PM www.boostdesigns.com, look at the kits, i know you said you want to peice your shit together, but with a look at that you may think other wise. Get this book. "Turbochargers" by hugh macinnies. It will help you alot, and understand the whole turbo setup. When i say whole, i mean whole. Well to a certain extent. Its only 20 bucks too. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
