I just got a used 96 Altima and the brake lights do not work when the headlights are on. I replaced the dual filament bulbs to no avail. I read somewhere that the brake light switch is probably faulty or needs adjustment. Does this make sense ? Can you also point me to some instructions on how to check and replace/adjust the brake light switch ? Thanks in advance.

Brake light switches work the same with headlights on or off. A problem with the switch makes no sense to me. One bad dual filament bulb can cause the problem. How many lightbulbs have you replaced? Check all the lights including front bumper and turn signals with the headlights on. At the opposite end of the running light/brakelight cicuits where the two may be connecting is the multi-function switch.

I initially replaced the driver side brake lights and did not replace the other side once I saw that it did not fix the problem. After reading your post, I replaced both sides and that fixed it. Thanks !! I really appreciate the help.
