I have a 95 cavalier with an automatic trans and the 2.2 engine. It will shift from park to reverse and to drive, but it will not come out of first gear. The speedometer does not work at all. Every once in a while it WILL shift out of first... and the speedo will jump up to the actual speed (which is around 40). Whenever it doesn't shift the speedo doesn't work. It has to be related somehow. I replaced the speed sensor on the trans and it didnt fix it. Please help!!

hmm.... sounds like your shifter cable might need to be adjusted possibly. Also check and make sure the connector into the tranny dosn't have crap on it or some how got inside of the plug.

The cable is adjusted properly because it wont shift no matter what position i put it in. And remember, the speedo wont even budge from 0 when it isnt going to shift. but thanks for the reply!

Sounds like a tranny problem to me, or maybe the wire to the speed sensor is shorting out or something. If you are sure the wire is OK then try resetting the computer by removing the negative battery terminal for about 30 seconds.

i had the same problem with my gf's old taurus. i changed the fluid and the filter and it started to work again, but then it fucked up worse so it could be your tranny. smack it a good 12 times with your hand and call it a few names like "asshole" "stupid fucking car" stuff like that and it might help a bit

if cable is adjusted properly and everything is where its supose to be your tranny is prolly fried.
what about the N safety switch, wouldn't have anything to do it with eh?
