after replacing the rear shoes on our 2001 windstar, I'm getting a grinding noise. grind......grind.....grind......grind.
The old shoes didn't seem to be to worn compared to the new ones. The drums were slightly pitted or grooved though. I took the van for a drive to town and back....about 15 miles and still getting the noise. I figure these shoes probably breaking into the drums would make a noise like this but also figured the trip to town would do the trick but didn't seem to. Also when I got back the drums seemed quite hot.
I'm no pro but the brake job didn't seem to difficult.
Just wondering if anyone had input? should I take the wheels back off and recheck it?
Thanks

Hello carolina.

I'd open up the side thats grinding, or are they both making noise?

Hello there CoachKarl, It sounds like the passenger side more than the other, I'm gonna take em both off this morning.

One should make sure that the hand-brake cable is not touching the hub .... if it wears too much, the wheel comes off!

Is the noise only when braking or all the time?. Normally brakes will get quite warm during normall driving. Of course they get hotter when dragging.

Well...this morning I took it to town and the grinding seemed to be only when I applied the brakes. I had two new tires put on the back. On the way back from town, I lost most of the brakes....squishy pedal to floor.
I got home and took off the wheel to see BF leaking. wheel cylinder had went bad, the bottom spring had also came loose........ I know better than that I really do, I've put on a lot of shoes in my day. I've sent my wife to NAPA for wheel cylinders for both sides and will redo both wheels again and see what happens.
thanks y'all any advise is still welcome.

After replacing both cylinders and putting everything back together they work just fine...no noise at all & good brakes.
I guess I really need to pay more attention to what i'm doing from now on... Thanks
