Replacing the ignition switch

My old 1990 240sx is having problems. Pretty sure it is the ignition switch going bad ...160K miles... sometimes the starter won't engauge ... Replaced the starter and same problem. Sometimes it dies as you come out of start .... Sometimes everything works fine. No error codes ....

Anyway ... my question .... has anyone replaced the ignition switch ?? I haven't pulled it apart yet but expect it has some kind of 'security' screws or something. Any special tools needed ?? Anything I need to watch out for ?? Any other parts I will need to get beyond the switch ??

Thanks

I'm not sure how yours is, but most of the ignition switches i've replaced had only 2 "security" screws/bolts... it's two bolts that don't have a HEX head, nor phillips, they are just rounded conical heads... so what you need is a hammer and a sharp strong chisel... hold the chisel down on the head of the screw at about 60 degrees or just somehow so that the chisel doesn't slip when you hit it with the hammer... make sure you hit the screws so that they spin in a COUNTER-CLOCK-WISE direction, the way you normally undo any normal thread screw... after a few hits the screws should be loosened up and you can keep lightly hitting them till you take them off...

After you replace the ignition switch you can either use the same bolts, and get them tight with the hammer and chisel, or you can just replace them with hex head bolts...
