Why does the idle stay up at startups?

Hello AF fans, I am a proud owner of a 96 4Runner,wht,w/2wd. It runs great but the idle takes awhile to come down(several minutes) on startups. I just tuned it, replaced the O2 sensor and cleaned out the intake manifold. Can anyone tell me how to correct this high idle on startups. Thanks for the advice.

Welcome to the AF!

What makes you think your fast idle stays on for an abnormally long time? Do you have another truck to compare it with? It is normal to stay on fast idle for a while - it totally depends on the engine temperature at start-up.

If it takes forever, check your thermostat. It might be stuck open.

Thanks for the reply.
By the way, would 174K miles on the 4runner have anything to do with it?
My concern is the shifting into R or D with the idle revving at 1400 rpm will cause damage to the transmission gears. Is this to be concerned about?
My 92 Honda Acc (150K miles)did the same thing. It was suggested to me to change some intake control valve that would cost $250+.
The Toyota's are excellently made therefore I would like to avoid any unneccessary component replacements.

Since I found this 4Runner Forum of enthusist, I'm hoping for a more insightful take on this vehicle.

Thanks for your time and reply.

I highly doubt that the higher RPM's would damage your transmission. A brand new Toyota will do the same thing until it warms up, therefore it is designed for this. I wouldn't replace anything unless you knew for sure it was bad, i.e. high revs -3000RPM+, unsteady idle, power surge...Anyways, just my 2 cents... Good luck!!

"If it takes forever, check your thermostat. It might be stuck open"

Maybe clean the throttle body.

that's normal. Mine does that for a while and starts dropping as the engine gets warmer

It's not normal if it takes alot longer than normal. He has to figure out how it compares with normal.

I need an answer to this question.

Brian,

The idle stays up at 1400rpm . My neighbor has a '00 and we found his stays there too on startups.
Thanks to everyone who stopped and shared their feedback.

Good - Thank you for investigating further and not insisting you need a fix. :)
