I recently bought a new timing belt kit for my 95 tercel and the instructions say I need two special Toyota tools to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, and then another special Toyota tool to remove the crankshaft pulley. Has anyone ever done this timing belt change without these special tools? Any advice on whether I really need them?

Thanks!

Not to rub it in, but in the manual that I outbid you by .50 says to use a special service tool. That's the only name they use, but they do show a picture of it. If you want, give me your email address and I'll email these pages to you about timing belt removal and installation.

Thanks, that would be really cool if you could e-mail those pages. I'm at ruedell@msn.com

I did!!!
all you need is A big screwdriver and a bracker-bar.
get the first pulley out (the small one on top of the big one they get together with 10mm screws)
then insert the screwdriver so it will lock the pulley.
get the bracker bar and the proper socket and get the center screw out (it is very tight)
then use the same bracker bar to push the pulley from the back out.... and you are done!!!
this was done in a 96 DX
