View Full Version : starter starter zacremacle 05-22-2005, 05:30 PM monooxide 05-22-2005, 08:16 PM Im getting ready to this on my S13....there are 3 bolts. One that you can see and 2 right below Intake Mani and im not sure how it comes off. atamotua 05-23-2005, 11:44 AM The s14 starter has 2 "long" bolts that hold it down to the transmission bell housing... if i'm not mistaken both of the bolts go in from the transmission side.... (if not, then the bottom one may be the one accessible from the starter side, and the top bolt accessible from the transmission side).... This means you'll have to jack up the car and get under it. Make sure u use some jack stands when you do this. Raise up the FRONT RIGHT corner of the car and also take off that wheel, the front right wheel to get more space so you can work more comfortable while under the car... You do need the tubular sockets, a wrench, and some extensions to get to that bolt... what i use on bigger nuts and bolts, where i need more force, is 1/2" sockets and wrenches... If you can't reach that top bolt even when under the car, you may need to loosen the tranny mount and lower it a bit... also to tilt the tranny even more you can stick a hydraulic jack from the front of the car right under the front of the oil pan and lift slightly to help the front of the engine go upwards, while the tranny will go down on the side where you need the space... you should place a pice of wood (a piece of a 2x4) on the part of the jack that will touch the oil pan so that you don't damage it... monooxide 05-23-2005, 05:04 PM sounds like too much work... but at least this should be the last time for it. atamotua 05-23-2005, 05:47 PM sounds like too much work... but at least this should be the last time for it. first see what you can get from the top, through the engine bay... then get under the car and without doing anything see if you can reach that bolt... if you can then you're done... Hawaiiandrifter 05-26-2005, 02:55 AM It is actually pretty easy to take off the starter bolts or at least it is for the S13. There is plenty of room to get in there and if its tight just use an open end. I can do all of it from the engine bay and no getting under the car involved. monooxide 05-26-2005, 01:30 PM That bottom bolt on that starter...was like 100 ft-lbs+ I was under that car trying to get that for like a good 30 minutes. Chuki_breath 05-26-2005, 07:46 PM lol. Thats why i love air tools. monooxide 05-26-2005, 07:52 PM I dont have any :D....thats why I feel really good when i get shit off. zacremacle 05-26-2005, 09:23 PM it took me forever to get my bottom bolt off also i had to get a peice of pipe to have more leverage to get it off. Chuki_breath 05-26-2005, 11:51 PM I dont have any :D....thats why I feel really good when i get shit off. yea i feel ya. When im at work and all the air hoses are being used im like fuck i gotta wrench it lol. THen i end up cracking it lose and slamming my hand into a fender or somthing. lol it only hurts for second right? lol. Then i jump around and do a little dance (you know the pain dance) and its gone. Then you have to go wash the paint guns and get thinner right in the fresh cuts on your hands and then run for water cuz your hand feels as if you just layed it in a fire. Yea i love work shit i have to work that job tomorrow. poor hands. o well you get used to it though. and your hands get all ugly and rough and calicy(sp? the hard skin parts like on the first set of knuckles by your palm). Makes you feel like a hard working man whahahhahah to bad i have no wife to come home to and have her service me  then cook some god damn dinner. monooxide 06-03-2005, 08:53 PM Im about to kick my car in the nuts if it had them...the damn top bolt on the STARTER i cant get to from the top or the bottom on the top theres a hardline with padded cover on it and then theres the brake hard lines and the brake booster from the top and then i cant get anything on it because the firewall is TOOO damn close to it I cant get anything ont this bolt and get it off. coolbone28 06-05-2005, 09:47 PM you gotta use a little swivel socket and reach it up there with a long extension. just gotta mess wwith it taht way. monooxide 06-05-2005, 10:05 PM It wasnt that i didnt know waht to use its that I didnt have the tools!! If you ever need something done...and dont have the tools call me ill figure something out...on this particular case my breaker bar with 1/2 to 3/8 and 9/16 socket was hitting the firewall so not getting on the bolt was the problem. Well i took an older 9/16 and grinded it from 1" deep to like 3/16" deep with a grinder then i had room and BOOM. Related Links Participate in thousands of discussions at AutomotiveForums.com!
