Old Camaro/Mustang...

Hey,

I’m posting this for my friend because he doesn’t have an internet connection at the moment. Anyways, he has about $5K at the moment to spend and he really likes the older Camaro/Mustang look. He want to have it more geared towards street racing though if that’s possible. So, what cars do you recommend?

Thanks!

For 5K you could get a 4th gen z28, if he wants an older look you're looking at a 3rd gen Z28 which is still good and hey you got plenty of money left over for upgrades.

You'll have to be more specific here.

If it were me I'd get an '87-'93 5.0 or an IROC.

I would say go for the 87-93 5.0 or IROC also, I would personally go for the fox but go for which either one you can find in better shape.

Fox body?

Also, he wants to know if it will be able to keep up with some of the other more modern cars (Talon, Eclipse, 300ZX, 240SX, etc.) in the handling department.

Thank you.

if you want a car that handled better, then i believe the IROC has the better suspension. however i would take the fox body over the iroc. because they look better today, and they're lighter ( even though the 4 link in the rear sucks, and the torque box in the back is known to break ) but they're everywhere so fixing them and parts for them is dirty cheap and practically everyone knows how to fix them.

i think you can get a fox body coupe with a 5.0 in it. the LX. the coupe has more rigidity than the hatchback (well usually thats the case)

So, I'll tell my friend to search for a 5.0 Fox Body Coupe Mustang. Should we search for any specific year? So, do you think that it could keep up with the more modern cars? Thanks guys!

for $5,000 you're not going to get an old car thats fast and handles. foxbodies handle like shopping carts. but they can go fast in a straight line.

i would try to find he notch backs. those are what they call the coupes. and the the LX becasue they're lighter then the GT's. the fox bodys are usually 5.0 equiped, but some of them ( very rarely ) are 4 bangers, or a 4 banger turbo. stay away from those~!!!!!

also its funny how you say that the fox body handles like a shopping cart becasue underneth the body shell, your mustang has the exact same chassis. down to almost the last screw, the only revision i see is the disc brakes in the rear, and probrably differen't shocks and springs. other then that, its the exact same thing. i had two of them on a lift once side by side, and i was amazed that it really was the same thing.

and when asked to attend a road racing event with my friend, I replied "no way, my car handles like shit."

Quick noob question, we were searching on Ebay for Fox Body's and didn't see very many. How is the Fox Body seperated from the other Mustangs? Are the internals the same as other 'Stangs just the body is different? Finally, I'm taking the 5.0 is referring to the motor?

Is there a website that lists all of the Mustang models, specs, etc?

Thanks!

87-93 mustang.

GTStang
05-19-2005, 12:37 AM
Fox-body Mustangs refer to 79-93 Mustang which sit on the Fox-chassis.

94-04 Sit on a slightly modified fox-chassis called Fox4 or more often SN-95

4-bangers Foxes are very rare? :lol2:

IROC's have better skipad numbers, Mustangs 5.0 have better Slalom number so handling is a toss up and both can be improved easily.

Okay, thanks guys. I take it there very good from a stop?

Also, I'm going to be getting a Z31 Turbo and who's do you think would win, his Fox Body or my Z31T? Just curious...

Thanks!

You have it backwards. Find one for 3-4k..and do 2k in mods and you'll be haulin ass.

Yeah, what dampachi said...get one for at least $3,500
Anything less will be in bad shape. Also, whatever you get, do NOT get a convertable model if you want to do anything but go in a strait line, no matter what kind of deal you find. Oh yeah, get one from 1989 or up, it'll have a mass air unit installed from the factory, and that's half the battle.

TheStang00
05-19-2005, 02:30 PM
yes 5.0 is referring to the motor, that motor is also often reffered to as a 302. but with 2k you can make a fox haul ass.

So basically he would whoop my ass if I was driving a Z31T? One more thing, he wanted to know if it had any problems racing from a stop? Is it FR or FF? His internet should be back up soon so he will probably be posting soon.

Uh-oh... :(

Hello guys, first post here. Thanks for helping me out Stephen. Anyways, thanks a lot for all of the help guys. Sorry I couldn't post myself but my internets been down. Anyways, would my Fox Body 5.0 Stang whoop his Z31T's bottom? :) Thank you.

Edit: One more thing, I hear the Mustangs get completely crap gas mileage. Is there any way to make this thing more efficient on gas? I heard it get's like 12 MPG, yuck!

bullshit. the only $1k foxbody i've seen was a rolling chassis. Good condition foxes start at $2,500.

That's the trade off. Want performance? Okay, then it's gonna eat gas. If you're looking for economy and performance..you want a turbo'd four banger. Not a heads/cam/intake V8.

drftk1d
05-20-2005, 01:10 AM
naw turbo 4 cyls dont necesarily get good mileage either, i thought the evolution would be better on gas than it is.

i've seen foxbody stangs for 1k.

GTStang
05-20-2005, 02:54 AM
Only 87-93 Fox body that I would touch for 1K are rolling chassis no engine/trans.

The gas mileage is not anything to write home about but certainly not 12mpg. Think more like avg. high teens to 20 if you don't drive like an ass.

for $5,000 you're not going to get an old car thats fast and handles. foxbodies handle like shopping carts. but they can go fast in a straight line.

But that's fixable! Maximum Motorsports or Griggs Racing goodies will change that shopping cart handling ability! Nothing like a brick on wheels showing a modern car what it can do! :naughty: Subframes and infloors, and no more chassis flex!

Well, after hearing about how the Fox Body is, it seems that it is of much better value compared to the Z31 and how it can be made so fast with little money, I'm thinking about getting one. Quick question, I'm not very fond of their looks/styling so could someone please post a pick of the nicest Fox Body they've ever seen?

Thanks!

drftk1d

SRP | Lucian

I do like the Z31's looks a lot but it just seems that the Fox Body is such a good car because every one says it can be made to go so fast with minimal money. I just thought it might be a good car for a beginner. I'm still trying to decide though.
