Sony Unveils New PlayStation 3 Consoles (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/video_game_expo)

Tue May 17, 7:33 AM ET

LOS ANGELES - Sony Corp (SNE.N). unveiled three flavors of its new PlayStation 3 video game machine Monday in what is likely a new round of console wars with rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co.

The new machine, set for release in the spring of 2006, is about the same size as the current generation PlayStation 2 but has a more rounded look. Besides black, the PS3 will be available in silver and white.

Sony officials said the PS3's new processor technology — called Cell — will offer high performance for movie-like realism in games, high-definition movies and other features.

"The PS3 is truly is a system to be placed in the center of the living room," said Ken Kutaragi, creator of the original PlayStation console as well as the more recent PlayStation Portable handheld.

Prices or a specific lineup of games that will be available were not were not provided, though Sony showed off numerous demonstrations of games in development.

The PS3 will use the Blu-ray disc format, capable of holding 50 gigabytes of information, which is about six times the capacity of existing DVDs, as well as slots for memory cards, a detachable hard drive and Bluetooth wireless for up to seven wireless controllers.

The PS3 also will be able to run the thousands of games available for the older PS2 and PS1, officials said.

One demonstration PS3 game showed a fiery battle between a soldier and a robot in an intricately detailed futuristic city. Individual tattoos and bits of blood could be seen on the warrior's face, while shafts of light beamed down from the rafters of a metallic corridor.

The announcement comes two days ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, an annual industry gathering in Los Angeles.

Last week, Microsoft showcased its new Xbox 360 in a 30-minute special on MTV.

Microsoft said it would begin selling Xbox 360 in North America around Thanksgiving, and Europe and Asia by the end of the year.

No pricing details have been announced on any of the systems.

Nintendo will discuss its new console, code-named Revolution, further on Tuesday morning.

In 2004, Sony's older PlayStation 2 led the U.S. console wars with 43 percent of the market, according to Jupiter Research. The original Xbox was a distant No. 2 with 19 percent, followed by Nintendo's GameCube at 14 percent. The remainder included handheld game systems.

But by 2010, Xbox 360 would grab the lead with 38 percent of the market, followed by Sony with 32 percent and Nintendo with 22 percent, Jupiter forecasts.

Microsoft is taking an entertainment hub approach with Xbox 360.

The curvy, white machine plays DVD movies and lets users listen to music, view photos and do real-time video chats with friends and relatives around the world.

The Xbox 360 features three processors, a removable 20-gigabyte hard drive, a custom graphics chip and built-in wireless for cable-free access to the company's Xbox Live online multiplayer

I wonder how much it will cost when it hits the market. I know when the ps2 came out the price on it was crazy.

The peak for Nintendo was N64 and GoldenEye...That was awsome. I am waiting for the Xbox 360 to come out, I think it is gonna top all.

SNES was the greatest game console ever, heaven forbid corporations should makes games that are actually fun to play nowadays like they used to be instead of being full of eye candy. Screw golden eye, super mario kart is still hours and hours of fun.

I think the PS3 and XBox-360 will be the only competition. Nintendo hasn't been able to market itself worth a flip since the 16-bit market. I hardly play my PS2 as it is, but will probably find myself buying the PS3 just for the hell of it.

Sony is very smart continually creating a tremendous amount of resale by implementing the older systems into the new ones. That is one reason why they are such hot sellers.

Nintendo is done for, unless things change greatly.

The N64 was even worthless as a paperweight. The SNES will be their crowning achievement. Nintendo needs to stick to the portable series now. I like the PS2 and will without a doubt buy the PS3... I might have to invest in a 360 as well though. For people like me, the familarity of the Playstation buttons and configuration is a welcome sight, to those who dont play games much.

64 had a shitoad of awesome games. wcw/nwo revenge, Mario 64, Zelda occarina of time, SMash bro.'s, donkey kong, mario kart 64., star fox, goldeneye, perfect dark. that's just off the top of my head. 64 was a great system.

N64 was the daddy, and Goldeneye the daddy of all N64 games. There were some other great games on there too, Mario, Mario Kart, ISS, Zelda.

This looks fantastic. It seems the PS3 has the Hardware advantage over the XBox 360 this time around as well. Let's hope it actually works better than the xBox 360. I'll buy it once the good games start flooding the market.

PS3 is gonna be ungodly.

Only reason Xbox outdid PS2 graphics-wise is because Xbox launched like a year after PS2 so they had way more development time. Now they are dead even, and since Apple worked with Sony on development, Xbox has no computer advantage anymore.

I think they will be dead even performance wise, and will only be seperated by game choice. And I think PS3 will win that battle solely due to GT and GTA.

the only reason I bought a PS2 was Grand Theft Auto. Everyone claims that Sony has all the support and big name games, but there hasn't been a single other game yet to catch my eye... its 95% garbage, and the good ones are usually also available on PC. Nintendo has Mario and Zelda, they are easily the two best series in video game history ever. :2cents:

I'd take those two games over the ENTIRE PS1/PS2/PS3 line-up anyday.

the fact that Revolution will play DVDs and Gamecube games only makes my spending easier.

what does apple have to do with anything? The proc is an 8 core cell proc (now only 7 core to increase to yield) developed by IBM Sony and Toshiba. Only the PPE is based on a power pc core developed by IBM. Btw that cpu is far too overhyped, its true its ahead of its time but that is a bad thing, since manufacturing capabilities are not yet to the point of making it viable as a general use CPU. Also the graphics are handled by nvidia's next gen gpu. So what did apple do? The pcb???

The 360 is actually closer to a mac since its using ibm's power pc (with multiple cores). So basically architecturally the cores in the 360 will be closer to macs sice they also happen to buy their power pc cpus from ibm.

The reason the PS3 will be more powerful than the 360 is another ~10 months of dev time. I also expect it to retail significantly higher than the 360 unless sony is really willing to take a big hit on the price of each one.

PS2's were over $800AUD here when they first came out, the PS3 will be higher IMO.

Good luck daddy.

I'll probably still stick with the Xbox. I've never really found the PS games to be all that interesting. But there's still a ways to go before they're released so who knows.

My plan....I'm getting the 360, but my roommate is getting the ps3, and i'm sure i'll have to get the revolution just for 007 and mario

Edit: Halo 3 is going to be a big hit on the PS3 because they are releasing it at the same time.

Personally, I will get the PS3, I prefer the more realistic shoot 'em up games, none of this halo crap. Also simply for the fact that I had the PS1, and PS2 and still have all of my games. Can't wait for the next GTA (if there is one, and probably would be realeased around the same time as PS3..)

i haven't researched this recently so i don't know if its changed but

PS3 is going to be using blu-ray technology which is capable of putting ~54GB of data on a disc while XBOX 360 is still using DVD technology with ~5GB per disc...imagine the possibilities for games on PS3. PS1 began CD-ROM technology, PS2 began DVD-ROM technology and PS3 uses blu-ray. with the first two being successes i have no doubt that PS3 will be as well.

i own a psp and PS2, so sony for life. and thats my :2cents:
