What is your gas mileage if you have one of the 6.0L, this isn't the SS version.

Thanks,
BGC

Greetings BGC99,

I hope I'm not intruding. The title of the thread says 2005. I have a Mid May 2004 Silverado LS 1500 Extended Cab with the Silverado Performance package. Think of it as an SS - except its rear wheel drive with locking differential and 450 pounds less weight (because I don't have all the all wheel drive linkages etc.).

I've posted about the truck often on the thread about gas mileage
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=335161

I started out getting about 18 on the highway when I got it from the dealer. With some changes in oil type, gas cap, tonneau cover etc. etc. I got it up to about 20.5 on the highway going 60 mph. Now - after break-in period has really gotten going (5200 miles on the odometer) - I'm up to 21.5 on the highway driving speed limit of 60.

Note: Unlike the SS - I have a 3.73 axle ratio (not the 4.10). I also have the towing package (coolers - tran and oil). I do plan on getting a Nelson Tune this year - that should add about 1 or 2 mpg and about 30 hp according to Nelson.

I'd love to know what is different about the 2005 Performance Package than what I have.

None most likely. I just wondered about the gas mileage. The window stickers listed 16/20 for the 5.3 and 14/19 for the 6.0 I think, anyway the 14 is correct for the city mileage.

Thanks,
BGC

I'm curious as to changing the gas cap for better mileage. Can you elaborate on this?

thx, jack

I went from using the brand new Chevy factory gas cap - to a brand new locking gas cap from an after market supplier - becauase at $2 a gallon - I wanted to lock the gas tank. No negatives experienced - no change in power or acceleration or starting - but an increase in my mileage.

LOL!

I thought the same thing. Then I had the instant mileage display on and it seemed higher by a couple MPG. so then I started watching my average MPG display. Sure enough - regular cap - one set of mileage numbers - locking cap - a different set. Maybe the caps give different pressure lock on the fuel system. I just know the truck runs as good or better with the locking cap on as with the regular one - yet mileage numbers are improved.

what brand of cap did you switch to, how much was it, and where did you get it? Also, White, GM put drums on the rear of the new 2wd SS, do you have drums or discs on the back of yours. I've seen some people thorize they did this because of the e-brake problems on the trucks with disc brakes.

Greetings Blender,

I believe the brand was Slant (or Stant) - yellow packaging. Got it at Advanced Auto - but its also available at many other auto stores - about $11 or $12 cost. Don't know if it would have the same effect on the 4.8 or 5.3 - but it sure is pleasant on my 6.0 V.H.O..

I have discs all around - and happy about it. The 2005 models in the 2wd SS or Silverado Performance package are almost identical to mine except they have "traction assist" and drum rear brakes. Though the descriptions and bundling combinations are changed - it seems they are just reconfigured descriptions from what mine is. However they claim 1 MPG different EPA ratings. Don't know if they adjusted the tuning or not to do it.

What I really don't understand - is why this category of truck is as cheap of a purchase price as it is. Considering the difference in value of the tires, wheels, suspension, engine, trailering option, and transmission - it doesn't make any sense it is only about $2000 (net after package discount promo). I mean - the tires and wheels to purchase alone are as much as the whole package costs. I mean - the 6.0 VHO engine and hd transmission should be worth $1500 to $2000 more besides - and the suspension? another $500 to $750 at least. Seems like buyers of these specific Silverado models - instead of paying a premium for the options - are actually getting a better deal (not to mention better performance and handling - and better resale value too).

True. I'm so pissed off for buying used now that GM's got the "employee discount" promo going, you wouldn't believe it. I could have bought a brand new truck with the same options as mine for probably just a couple grand more (though I haven't checked since the promo began). A new truck with my options BEFORE the discount was running $32k - $35k, because i checked when i was out shopping.

Yep - I'm sure that if I checked - my new truck I bought last august of 04 - is probably cheaper today than then. Such is life. I love my truck - worrying about "how much different" it might have been - well - those dollars different might make me less positive on my "new" truck I have with 6,000 miles on it and 10 months on it. I'll be happy with what I have

However - I'm guessing I could get out of it pretty much whatever I paid - because its unique. Such is life. Too many things to enjoy and no desire to feel bad about what I have.

I saw one of these at a local dealer msrp was 36k. Seems like alot for a 2wd truck. Also, has anyone driven the new aluminum 310hp 5.3? I just got quoted 22.7k for a new '05 WT ext. cab 4x4 with the 310hp 5.3. msrp was 30,280.

Greetings Redneck, I just checked at a local dealership in this area that has what is now called the Chevrolet Silverado SS 2wd. In effect its just exactly like mine except it also has traction assist but doesn't have disc brakes all around. Same everything else for options. MSRP is $32,900 the GM employee incentive price AFTER incentives is $24,700.

Looks just like mine.

Alright, according to this topic, this incentive is not meant to make anyone feel bad, but this is doing it. $24,700 for a new SS, or I paid $19,300 for an '02 with 26,000 miles on it. That kinda sucks.

A 2 wheel drive SS - with Custom Cloth interior and 40/20/40 split bench seat.

Point is - that is a few hundred more than I paid for mine in August 2004.

And remember - you're comparing pricing in your area - with a price I'm showing in my area. I don't know how cheap/expensive your area is. I do know that Colorado as an example has much higher prices than does Wisconsin on used vehicles and often on new vehcles too.

Yeah, and I forgot that doesn't include the ~$4,500 for tax tag and title in my area. My $19,300 was for everything including the Rhino Liner and tool box. I'm not so unhappy now.

Sorry, that should have read "no one". Dealers around here got more of them than the regular iron 5.3's.
