gday,

i have a 87 sv21 camry AUTO with 285Ks. after a short drive it started squealing loudly, then stopped suddenly in park. now i have restarted it, it runs fine, but when in reverse it clicks loudly. there is still power in all gears. there does not seem to be any damage to the flywheel and starter motor. what are my options ? what do i check?

Have you checked the level and condition of the tranny fluid?

If both are fine, you may be experiencing a problem with your torque converter, which acts as a clutch in your automatic tranny. After 285K's, it might be about done.
