I have a 2001 pontiac g/a gt that a couple of days ago would not start, after a jump start it ran fine except the keyless wouldn't work and the radio was dead. when I got home I found a bad fuse (radio amp/trunk relay) and replaced. keyless works fine now but radio still dead, no LOC or SECURITY message, just plain dead. I have tested every fuse including under hood with a test light, no bad fuses. pulled the radio and chcked for power at wiring connector-no power. when I got home with the car I load tested the battery-good, checked alt output-14.2.

When you tested the fuses did you test with the test light at the fuse block? If so did you have power on both sides of the fuse?

When you tested the wires at the radio harness did you have a constant Hot wire? If so you can check the radio by making a small jumper wire from the constant hot to the keyed accessory wire, this should provide power to the radio allowing you to check to see if the radio is good.
Good luck,

yes, both sides of fuses checked (about a hundred times), no power at all to connector with switch at acc and ign, with the exeption of a purple wire that varies from 1-3 volts. :screwy:

Boy, this is a tough one, I usually love a good electrical problem, ( easier with the car in front of you though). Unfortunatly I have not done too much with the 2001's. The only thing I can think to do is to try to trace back the radio harness to the fuse block, With any luck you will come across something before it cets real complicated.

By chance did you smell any burnt wires after the car was jumped, I have only seen it once but when I was installing stereos and other accessories A customer came in with a similar problem, turns out he fried the wires behind the fuse block. Just a thought.

nothing burned, that would be too easy. I dont know which wire is power for radio or I would trace it or throw 12 to that wire to test radio.

When I was working on the GM cars installing radios That was a long time ago ( Early 90's) the 12v power wire was yellow [if I am remembering right]. I will check my Haynes manual in the morning and send you a new post. I do not think that GM would have changed the wire colors that they have had for years.

I'll get back to you tomarrow.

hey, one question is if you have checked the driver and passenger side fuse panels? they're on the side of the dash when the doors are open. if you've already checked those fuses, then here's a little input on hoags post...my haynes says the yellow wire at the radio is IGN voltage and runs to the driver's panel, RDO ACC FUSE 10A(Hot in ACC or RUN). then it says the orange wire is BAttery voltage and this wire runs to the pass. fuse panel, RDO BATT FUSE 10A(Hot at all times). hope this helps you out.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!! :lol2:
Thanks SHYGUY, there is nothing in the owners manual about a fuse panel on the passenger side (that I could find), nor did the guy at the local stereo shop no anything about it. Popped in a new fuse and I'm good to go. I was getting real close to going to the dealer with this problem, boy am I glad I waited. Maybe I should get me one of them there Haynes mauals. Now if I can get some help on my Sonoma in the GMC forum I'll really be cooking. Thanks everyone :bananasmi
