Cop cars.....what do they have?silveradoking 05-15-2005, 12:21 AM Since my little incident, I was wondering what do cop cars have on them? I mean performance wise? Last I heard that 1 cop car, has about $60,000CAN worth of eqiupment on the car? I see a lot of cops in my area zoom off like crazy down the road, what is it that they add, anyone know? BlenderWizard 05-15-2005, 12:21 AM What kinda car you talking about? Crown Vic, Impala? v10_viper 05-15-2005, 12:53 AM When the new Chevy Impala came out Car&Driver tested it and it was like a 15 second 1/4 car, not that fast. The Crown Vics have the 4.6 but I dont know what all is done to it. They are definately fast though, having ridden in one, and I also watched a cop do a 180 in one and smoke em fairly good. All in the same night actually, county cop was lookin for me, seen me in his rearview spun it around and caught me, then I had to ride 25 miles away, which we got there in 15 minutes, for a breathalyzer. But it doesn't matter, your truck can always out run a cop...in a field or ditches. I would have been better off if I ran because it was winter and in our town the pile snow up by a grain elevator so I could have caused him to have gotten stuck, but oh well. silveradoking 05-15-2005, 01:22 AM well, I mean't more along the lines like......I know for sure in my area a couple cops that I know of have the b&m transmission coolers......When they get the cars from the factory....the police install there electronics, computers and such on the inside, but I was wondering what they do under the hood..... v10_viper 05-15-2005, 01:36 AM I found this one but it doesn't help too much. http://www.smithfieldpd.com/cruiser.htm <--Ford http://www.gmfleet.com/us/products/specialized/police/impala9c1/ <--Impala White Lightening 05-15-2005, 07:58 AM well, I mean't more along the lines like......I know for sure in my area a couple cops that I know of have the b&m transmission coolers......When they get the cars from the factory....the police install there electronics, computers and such on the inside, but I was wondering what they do under the hood..... Greetings, I know that in the Crown Vics of the later 90s - the Interceptors come with a tone of specialized components. Special brakes, alloy/aluminum drive shaft, performance transmission, special engine mods including higher compression, heavier alternators, structural modified frame and roof - performance heavy suspension. I believe an Interceptor versus a standard Crown Vic is near 400 pounds different in weight. and a pile more HP. Interceptors - coming from Ford - are built like a race car. And some State Patrols use the modified Mustang - doesn't have the foot print of the Crown Vic - but the power to weight ratio is something like a dragster. And then there is the new Caprice??????? Can't outrun a Motorola :nono: :loser: Here, Indiana. They use the crown vic and camaro for interstates and highways. Where high speed is more of a necessity. then they use the vic again and impala for city street use since the impala is more economic, it doesn't need to go as fast. BlenderWizard 05-15-2005, 03:15 PM Any P.D.'s using the supercharged Impalas? The Impala is getting a new front end and a V8 later this year... http://www.tuningnews.net/news/050105/chevrolet-impala-monte-carlo.php 84fiero123 05-15-2005, 04:14 PM when i was in tenn. in the 90-95 time they had supercharged 350's or mabe the were 305's can't remember, as there persuit cars. in the 70's mass. used fords with th 460 intercepter engines. when gm built them for cops they generaly have equipment that is not available for the general public, if you really want to know just go to your local state police garage and ask the machanics, now days everything is supercharged by gm. now a story, in 89 i was sitting at home and got aphone call from a friend. Steve turn you scanner on. theres a cop chaceing a lombo on 290, passed a radar pursuit mustang at over 110. so i listened, the mustang was in persuit to over 150 mph then the radio went silent for a min. or 2.maybe 3. then the trooper came on; lambo gone, troopers out of gas. send gas. moral. make sure you got a full tank of gas. jeverett 05-16-2005, 08:23 AM I will tell you what the new Crown Vic's have on them. I just equipped 13 brand new that had less than 10 miles on them. They really have nothing more than dual exhaust. They have a 245 HP 4.6 ...they stop dead at 120 mph. You can hold it to the floor and 120 is all it does, the engine doesnt shut down, it just is goverened. So if your in Barrow county Ga, and can do over 120..you're good for a little while!! the 04 Vic's that we use in my county top out at about 138.... I think Webster County (where I live) is swapping to the new Dodge Charger police interceptor next year or so... 485HP 6.1 HEMI.... jeverett 05-16-2005, 08:28 AM Greetings, And some State Patrols use the modified Mustang - doesn't have the foot print of the Crown Vic - but the power to weight ratio is something like a dragster. White Lightening It is now pretty much a rule that no state patrol is to use the Mustangs anymore. Its a frickin rule here in Georgia. They had too many high-speed related partolman deaths in the years they used them. They took them off the road. I do believe the last Mustang that was used for high-speed pursuit here in Ga killed a man, and the experts that read all of the info in the "black box" of the car stated that he was in excess of 180mph when he wrecked. SInce then all have been removed from the fleet except for shows and parades. BlenderWizard 05-16-2005, 01:06 PM Cobb County here in Georgia has a TON of Camaro pursuit cars. Marietta actually has a corvette, but they confiscated that from a drug dealer. broughy84 05-16-2005, 01:22 PM here in Knox county Indiana, we have alot of Trailblazers, (Inline 6 cylinder) and our sherrif has a 2003 Suburban. They also have Crown Vics and Impala's *that's all the sherrif's dept** Now in Bicknell (that's the city I live in) we have one Dodge Intrepid *cheif car, nothing but a stock car*, a police package Impala, and a Police package Caprice (350 LT1), and 4 police package Chevy Lumina's They all have the 3800 Series II Supercharged V-6 in them. They are light and will FLY!!! I was riding with Kevin (Bicknell #6) one night when he got in a chase with a mustang and we were doing 140mph in a LUMINA!!! Oh the sherrif's dept also has a drug seized Pontiac Firebird Formula! Greetings Broughy84, Personally - I don't want to be in a car going 140 MPH if that car isn't heavy, designed for aerodynamic ground push, and has a parachute on the back end. At 100 on a motorcycle - even a wear depression in the pavement can cause the wheels to go slightly "air" or lightweight at minimum. At 140 in a lightweight Lumina - it better have stock car modifications (like fiberglass frame etc.). White Lightening airjam18 05-16-2005, 04:49 PM Here in Dallas we got just about everything.......Dallas used to run the Crown Vic Police Interceptors but now have a handful of Impalas and seem to be switching to the new Dodge Intrepids.........By the way.....those intrepids are insanely fast.....I was cruising at about 80 with the rest of traffic when one came by me screaming......the Park Cities have everything from Durangos and Expeditions to nice Tahoes and Yukons.........state troopers here still use camaros.....I've only seen a couple but they were decked out in SS trim.....no telling how fast those are...... Tony Stewart Fan 05-17-2005, 08:19 AM I think Webster County (where I live) is swapping to the new Dodge Charger police interceptor next year or so... 485HP 6.1 HEMI.... The new Charger police cruisers are goign to be pretty amazing. They look really cool and will definitely have a ton of power to go along with the looks. They definitely look like they'll run people down with ease. jeverett 05-17-2005, 09:35 AM Oh yeah. I saw them in my lastest Car and Driver. Looks very bad-ass. I can't want to drive one silveradoking 05-17-2005, 08:50 PM I know up hear in Canada, they will start getting the new Chargers, that will be way cool...Maybe I can get one and add some strobe lights an it and see what the police will say...... Tony Stewart Fan 05-18-2005, 09:15 AM Here's a picture of the Charger police cruiser. I think it looks really cool. I can't believe the police cruisers are going to look better than my own car. I bet the cops are pretty happy that they're getting these. http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/03/24/020290.2.jpg jeverett 05-18-2005, 09:29 AM The new version that uses the 6.1 is the SR8 I believe or something. It adds 20" wheels and many suspension mods..plus the 485HP hemi... they do look good though. I'd have to make him pull me over to take a look at it! Tony Stewart Fan 05-19-2005, 08:32 AM I can't imagine a lot of people would try and outrun that police car. It really does look like it has a lot of power behind it. I'd be excited if i were a cop and were getting the opportunity to drive one. jeverett 05-19-2005, 08:42 AM I get the best of both worlds.. I'm not a cop, so I don't get shot at and have to be out all hours of the night. I'm just good friends with all around here. Plus I equip the cars...SO I get to drive em and play with all the cool stuff I just installed to "test" Tony Stewart Fan 05-20-2005, 08:07 AM That would be really cool. I bet you're looking forward eqipping the new Chargers when they come out. They definitely look a lot better than any old police cruiser. The Georgia State Patrol's cars look pretty cool... I used to have a friend who worked at Wolf Camera, and, apparently, the GSP had one of their confiscated cars on display somewhere. It was a 3-series BMW with the GSP paint scheme. That looked really cool. Also, near where I live, the paint scheme for Marietta police is similar to that pic you found of the Charger. They have a couple of Corvettes they cruise around in with that paint scheme. It's nice. jeverett 05-20-2005, 08:35 AM Ahhhh the GSP...the old Blue and Grey.. 01Blackerado 05-20-2005, 10:12 AM The last time a talked to a buddy of mine who's a sherrif for loudon county here in VA. Well he popped the hood open and there was all kinds of things going on in there from GPS tracking to low jack tracking, all wired through the whole system!! Supercharger kenne belle style... intake, and headers usually no exhuast from cat back to avoid setting the wrong examples nineball481 05-20-2005, 05:24 PM Here is what most of our troopers drive: http://www.pvec.co.uk/images/Gallery/USA/scan0387.jpg This year they have started riding Harleys with the same paint scheme. I personally like the way they look. They have a few Camaros, Suburbans, and avalanches as well. 99redsilverado 05-21-2005, 12:25 AM maybe ill be able to get on with GSP some day....when i get done with school that is and i just know theyll be the first ones in GA with the chargers Tony Stewart Fan 05-23-2005, 07:58 AM Here is what most of our troopers drive: http://www.pvec.co.uk/images/Gallery/USA/scan0387.jpg This year they have started riding Harleys with the same paint scheme. Maybe after 17 years it's time for Ford to redesign the Crown Vic... jeverett 05-23-2005, 10:42 AM The Crown Vic will be redesigned this upcoming year. Not, the 05's, the 06's are the ones. You can't go wrong with a Vic..i mean come on..if they wern't governed, they would run in excess of 160 w/o breaking a sweat. And it sticks to the road like glue...I'm a big fan of them myself..although I do know there are better things out there. I'll be sure to inform y'all when we get to test drive that new SR8 Po-po package charger... Tony Stewart Fan 05-24-2005, 09:49 AM I'll be sure to inform y'all when we get to test drive that new SR8 Po-po package charger... I can't wait to hear what you have to say about the Charger cruiser. I'm sure a lot of cops are pretty psyched to have these coming out. A new car with a lot of power should definitely be a welcome addition. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
