89 Cherokee 4.0 Fuel rail leak ...JamesJH 05-12-2005, 04:53 PM On the front of my 80 Cherokee Laredo 4.0 fuel rail I have a drip .. there's a bulbous gadget like a filter attached to the front of the fuel rail and the leak is coming from around it, it is not split or physically defective, so seems to be an o ring or ?? Any advice about fixing this?? JamesJH 05-12-2005, 04:56 PM It's an 89 not an 80... sorry Dale Aeppli 05-12-2005, 06:19 PM It's an 89 not an 80... sorry the item you are talking about is it a small round cannister & is it held in place with 2 small bolts. if so that is the fuel pressure regulator it has a small O ring which is probably leaking dale jeepman600@sbcglobal.net :disappoin JamesJH 05-13-2005, 10:58 AM Thanks Dale, I called the dealer and discussed it with them, you are right it was the o ring on the regulator .. I had a deuce of a time getting it off, had to remove the fuel rail, but had an o ring in my kit, so I fixed it yesterday afternoon ... I'm gald it happened because I saw how grimy my injectors are and ordered a kit to rebuild the injectors .. my next project .. leak is fixed and I'm feeling good. James Edbrooks 05-16-2005, 10:11 PM Should not have to remove the fuel rail or injectors to change the pressure regulator. Three bolts hold it to the rail. There is an o-ring where the regulator fits into the fuel rail. There are also some special o-rings where the fuel return line fits into the regulator. I have had the regulator off a couple of times on my cherokee without removing the fuel rail. However, since you found the injectors needed work, it's probably a good thing you did. JamesJH 05-17-2005, 12:43 PM Hey edbrooks ... yes, 'twould be nice if all things were as they should be, but it was the first time I had taken the regulator off and I really wasn't familiar with the injector system and didn't have a manual, in short, I was working (flying) by the seat of my pants, didn't have the right tools, was out in the middle of nowhere, and had to improvise. Because I wasn't familiar with the injector/fuel rail system, I didn't want to break anything, so I took the cautious route and removed the fuel rail to get to the nuts on the regulator .. this circumvented my having to take apart the injectors, which were so gummed up they were tight and grimy and rather foreboding .. anyway, taking the fuel rail off and putting it back on really helped me to get familiar with the injector system and revealed how dirty it was. the whole project only took me about an hour and a half to complete so it was very beneficial to me. Po Pilot 05-17-2005, 07:07 PM Good thing you got it fixed! #1 casue of engine fires on the old XJ's! Do NOT attempt to drive your rig if you are leaking anywhere along the fuel rail! JamesJH 05-18-2005, 12:52 PM Hey Po Pilot.. Thanks for the tidbit of info .. I did drive it a very short distance from the transit station to my pad (praying all the way), but I wouldn't drive it any further. I took a day off from work to fix it .. I live in a rather remote community on SF Bay and don't have easy access to parts, so I started looking for a motorcycle, used to have one and they are very convenient when you have to run to get parts or whatever .. I'm still looking, I do like to ride up out in the country, but I won't drive the Jeep with a fuel leak. Is Po Pilot an indicator that you are a pilot? James Po Pilot 05-18-2005, 03:20 PM Yeah. An out of work broke pilot hence the PO! JamesJH 05-19-2005, 01:11 PM Hey PO Pilot.. Sorry to hear you're grounded .. I've flown in small craft several times with friends, one friend had a Maule STOL, he left me fly her around the Bay Area, over SF, out over the Farallones Islands to swing back up over Marin and what used to be Hamilton AFB .. it was a kick, I asked him about stalling and he let me pull her nose up to vertical, but I couldn't take the disorientation, so I pushed it back down and he pulled it back up til we stalled and fell over backwards for a couple of rolls.. then he pulled it out .. very heady stuff.. I saw a couple of guys up in Sebastopol flying a couple of ultralights with parasails .. they were only about 100 ft up over the apple orchards and they were having a blast.. I've always thought flying ultralight would be a kick. I know this is off subject, so if you wanna chat email me at zyberman@hotmail.com Regards JamesJH vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
