1988 4Runner Head Gasket Start Problemissjoe 05-12-2005, 01:23 AM I just bought a 1988 4Runner 140k miles,V6 with blown drivers side head gasket. It started when I bought it alot of white smoke. Next day I cant seem to restart it. It turns over fine and starts to fire but wont keep running. Ive taken the spark plugs out and cleaned them and turned over engine to blow out water. There is no water in oil. I havn't decided whether to do head gasket myself or not yet. Looking for advice. Thanks Steve Brian R. 05-12-2005, 10:18 AM Toyota reportedly covers replacing head gaskets once on all 88-95 3.0 V6's and warrents them for 8 years or 100,000 miles, Try these numbers: 1-800-404-7636 or 1-800-331-4331 to find out if your vehicle is eligible for repair of the head gasket. Another possibility is to try your local dealer. issjoe 05-12-2005, 08:18 PM Toyota reportedly covers replacing head gaskets once on all 88-95 3.0 V6's and warrents them for 8 years or 100,000 miles, Try these numbers: 1-800-404-7636 or 1-800-331-4331 to find out if your vehicle is eligible for repair of the head gasket. I just put in a bottle of heat in gas sense its been sitting for over a year. Thinking about doing the head gasket myself and just taking in slowly. Steve Brian R. 05-12-2005, 11:49 PM I had heard that this replacement policy covers the head gasket for one repair at any stage in the engine life with no mileage limit. Once it is repaired, then the warranty period I quoted above applies. Investigate this more thoroughly. It may save you alot of money or time. Search this forum and the web for more details. We have talked about it alot. As far as your starting problem goes, I bet if you fix the head gasket, the starting problem will go away. issjoe 05-14-2005, 12:57 AM I had heard that this replacement policy covers the head gasket for one repair at any stage in the engine life with no mileage limit. We have talked about it alot. As far as your starting problem goes, I bet if you fix the head gasket, the starting problem will go away. I'm getting nowhere with Toyota. They tell me the warranty was only one time, one year, unlimited milage. My position with Toyota is, because engine only went 40k before head gasket went again, there must have been faulty material or installation. In other words if it wasn't repaired correctly, that their fault. Of course Toyota disagrees. Thanks Brian R. 05-14-2005, 02:10 AM They work hard to weed out the easily discouraged. Don't give up. mmof3bys 05-20-2005, 05:31 PM Not true! Mine is a 90' I had my head gasket replaced earlier this year. They go by your VIN# so I was to say the least "disappointed"! :screwy: Toyota reportedly covers replacing head gaskets once on all 88-95 3.0 V6's and warrents them for 8 years or 100,000 miles, Try these numbers: 1-800-404-7636 or 1-800-331-4331 to find out if your vehicle is eligible for repair of the head gasket. Brian R. 05-21-2005, 12:08 AM What is not true? mmof3bys 05-23-2005, 12:08 PM I tried approaching Toyota with having my head gasket replaced and I had to give them my VIN# (1990 Model) and they said it was not covered. What I meant was that was not "entirely" true.. :) Toyota reportedly covers replacing head gaskets once on all 88-95 3.0 V6's and warrents them for 8 years or 100,000 miles, issjoe 05-29-2005, 05:16 PM I went as high as I could get at the Toyota 1 800 #. The supervisor said on my vin# it was one year unlimited milage. They said it was a "courstesy repair". They put in new block and head gaskets. Anyway, that was their final position. I could put a complaint in writing, but it goes to the same department. Ive hired a mechanic that is doing R&R of timing belt and head gaskets. He has got everything apart and the head gaskets look fine. I will be having the heads pressure tested on Tues. I bought a complete valve grind gasket set. The mechanic is doing labor for $400. The gasket set and timing belt and new bolts were $160 from engnbldr.com. So with head work I should be at about $750 which sees to be pretty good deal. Thanks for your help. The government in Canada & USA will force car manufacturers to recall a vehicle based on safety or emissions but the headgasket was a voluntary recall made by Toyota as many notices were mailed to customers and many customers were notified by phone. As well many owners would contact any Toyota dealership or even the head office and give them the VIN afterwards the owner would take their truck to any Toyota dealership and have the work done at no cost to them and given a free rental car. Some people who already had the work done elsewhere would partially or completely get re-embursed by Toyota,I have read this many times on the 61 or so 4-Runner/pickup dedicated discussion sites.
