Hey fellow Accord Owners. I am curious to see what everyone thinks about which oil to use. I have a 94 Accord EX (F22B1) with 170,000 miles on it and my car runs great :). I use 5w-30. I tryed 10w-30 before but then I know that 5w-30 is better in cold weather plus it is recommended. I hear 5w-30 is better and I also hear 10w-30 is better for a higher mileage car. I know in 94-97 Accords you can use either one. What do you guys think? Which oil do you guys use?

Depends on your needs, and the engine's condition. If operated in moderate temps, a tight engine with low miles can use 5/30 no problem. Lighter oil will improve fuel mileage slightly too. High mile engine, or one that uses some oil will benefit from 10/30 or higher. The additional scuff protection and sealing outweighs other concerns.

Hondas are by nature very close-tolerance engines, putting something very heavy in can be like trying to force softballs into a tennis ball can. It can't flow well through the tight fit.

Most engines that reccomend 5/30 will also state in the manual that 10/30 is acceptable and preferred if summer conditions are common. 5/30 is great for fuel economy, but lousy in hot weather for hard operation.

Yeah it's kinda hard to pick one huh? They both have pros and cons. I also hear that people use 5w-30 during the winter and 10w-30 during the summer. I was thinking like what you mentioned about being being the right weight so it can flow properly through the engine.

Why not follow Honda's recommendation? In the '94 it's 5W-30 year-round. That's what I use (in a '93 with 180,000 miles).

Thanks for your input guys. Yeah I like using 5w-30. Thats good to heard that other people are using it in a high mileage Accord too.

I would recomend you use a oil spec. for high mileage cars. They have seal conditioners to help keep them from cracking.

Define "running a lot better."

I doubt putting HEAVIER oil in would do all that. Especially the "faster" part.

The one time I took my accord into change my oil. God damn I'm an idiot for this. Okay, so there was a new place that just opened, a mom and pop oil and muffler shop. I go and take my accord in for an oil change and fluid level check. It turns out they put 10w-40 in. 1000 miles later I have destroyed at least one intake valve in each cylinder. M*THER F*CKERS!!! I wanted to take them to court, but I can't prove that the oil had anything to do with the damage. So I lose my engine. I guess that's what I get for being lazy. Now I have to get another accord.
